Parent education: an evaluation of STEP on abusive parents' perceptions and abuse potential.

J Child Adolesc Psychiatr Nurs

Progressive Home Care, Inc., Durham, NC, USA.

Published: April 1999

Problem: To examine the effects of a structured, time-limited parent training group on abusive or potentially abusive parents.

Methods: A pretest-posttest control group design was used with consenting parents (N = 18) to examine the effects of Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) on abusive parents' perceptions of their children's behaviors and on the parents' potential to physically abuse. The Adlerian Parental Assessment of Child Behavior Scale and the Child Abuse Potential Inventory were used to measure treatment effects.

Findings: After participating in STEP, abusive parents had significantly more positive perceptions of their children and were significantly less potentially abusive. Using volunteers, the project cost an average of $100 for each parent.

Conclusions: The research lends empirical support to individual psychology and family systems theory. Future research is indicated using larger samples to examine lay vs. professional leadership of the groups, as well as comparisons of different parenting programs with abusive parents.

Prefrontal 5α-reductase 2 mediates male-specific acute stress response.

Sci Adv

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, College of Pharmacy, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT, USA.

A key response to acute stress is the increased brain synthesis of the neurosteroid allopregnanolone (AP). Although the rate-limiting step of this reaction is catalyzed by 5α-reductase (5αR), the role of its two primary isoenzymes, 5αR1 and 5αR2, in stress reactivity remains unclear. Here, we found that acute stress led to increased levels of 5αR2, but not 5αR1, in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) of male, but not female, rats.

The emerging field of 3D organ modeling encounters several imaging issues in particular related to antigen retrieval and sample loss during staining processes. Due to their compact shape, several antibodies fail to penetrate intact organoids or spheroids. Histology of organoids can be approached by paraffin inclusion and sectioning at 5 μm as performed for biopsies.

Background: Evidence supporting cannabis substitution along with liberalized cannabis laws have left recovery homes such as sober living houses (SLHs) in a difficult position regarding policies relating to cannabis use among SLH residents. Moreover, there are few studies of cannabis use among SLH residents that can be used to inform cannabis use policies. Here we assess whether cannabis is related to alcohol use among SLH residents.
