Oral lichenoid lesions caused by hypersensitivity to mercury in amalgam fillings may mimic oral lichen planus on clinical and histologic examination. A positive patch test reaction to more than one mercurial allergen increases confidence in the diagnosis and justifies the removal and replacement of all amalgam fillings with those made of other materials. A complete remission may be expected about 3 months after the last amalgam filling is removed.

This longitudinal prospective study aimed to assess orthodontic patients' immune system response to metal ion release in saliva. Thirty adult patients (18-35 years) were equally divided into three groups: groups at the end (G1) and beginning (G2) of multibracket appliances (MBA) treatment and a non-treated control group (G3). Participants were evaluated at four timepoints within 21 days, with saliva samples being analyzed for metal ion concentrations and blood for the lymphocyte transformation test (LTT).

A novel colorimetric and fluorogenic probe L based on hydrazine carbothioamide and 1,8-naphthalimide moieties has been designed and synthesized for the hypersensitive detection of Hg or Ag ions. The observed probe L showed colorimetric and fluorometric responses for these studies when Hg or Ag was added to the DMSO - HEPES buffer solution (pH = 7). An interference test with other metal ions was determined, and the high selectivity of Hg and Ag did not interfere with other metal ions in colorimetric and fluorogenic methods.

Background: Children are at high risk for exposure to toxic metals and are vulnerable to their effects. Significant research has been conducted evaluating the role of these metals on immune dysfunction, characterized by biologic and clinical outcomes. However, there are inconsistencies in these studies.
