High-tech medical solutions need careful implementation to ensure optimum reliability and good patient care. Figures from the Medical Devices Agency show that a patient may be three to 10 times more at risk from user error than from faulty equipment. Informed equipment selection and user training is paying dividends in one trust.

Despite awake tracheal intubation being considered the safest method of intubation for patients with predicted difficult airways, there is limited evidence and poor availability of training interventions to assist emergency medicine physicians achieve competency in this technique. Here, we describe a novel, cadaver-based course for emergency medicine physicians to acquire skills in awake tracheal intubation. A convenience sample of 15 emergency medicine physicians from across Canada participated in the pilot course.

Short-Time Preamplification-Assisted One-Pot CRISPR Nucleic Acid Detection Method with Portable Self-Heating Equipment for Point-of-Care Diagnosis.

Anal Chem

January 2025

State Key Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems Engineering, School of Instrument Science and Techonology, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an 710054, China.

Infectious diseases, especially respiratory infections, have been significant threats to human health. Therefore, it is essential to develop rapid, portable, and highly sensitive diagnostic methods for their control. Herein, a short-time preamplified, one-pot clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) nucleic acid detection method (SPOC) is developed by combining the rapid recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) with CRISPR-Cas12a to reduce the mutual interference and achieve facile and rapid molecular diagnosis.

Middle Ear Mechanics in the Barn Owl.

J Morphol

January 2025

Department of Zoology, Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Denver, Colorado, USA.

The barn owl is a common research subject in auditory science due to its exceptional capacity for high frequency hearing and superb sound source localization capabilities. Despite longstanding interest in the auditory performance of barn owls, the function of its middle ear has attracted remarkably little attention. Here, we report the middle ear transfer function measured by laser Doppler vibrometry and direct measurements of inner ear pressures.

Background: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a complex three-dimensional deformity, and up to now, there has been no literature reporting the analysis of a large sample of X-ray imaging parameters based on artificial intelligence (AI) for it. This study is based on the accurate and rapid measurement of x-ray coronal imaging parameters in AIS patients by AI, to explore the differences and correlations, and to further investigate the risk factors in different groups, so as to provide a theoretical basis for the diagnosis and surgical treatment of AIS.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of 3192 patients aged 8-18 years who had a full-length orthopantomogram of the spine and were diagnosed with AIS at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from January 2019 to March 2024.

Background: In the intensive care unit (ICU), the incidence of iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) is relatively high and is associated with various adverse clinical outcomes. Therefore, it is crucial to identify simple and practical indicators to assess the mortality risk in ICU patients with IDA. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the Neutrophil Percentage-to-Albumin Ratio (NPAR) levels in patients with IDA in the ICU and their all-cause mortality at 30 and 365 days.
