Combined surgery for cataract and glaucoma.

Curr Opin Ophthalmol

University of South Florida, Sarasota.

Published: April 1993

The current literature and meeting abstracts regarding combined cataract and glaucoma surgery are reviewed. Potential acuity measurements are compared. Intraoperative manipulation of the pupil, wound size, antimetabolites, and types of filtration surgery are also discussed. Postoperative intraocular pressure rise, fibrinous anterior chamber reaction, induced postoperative astigmatism, and anterior and posterior capsular problems are presented. Although great strides in techniques in each of the areas of cataract and glaucoma surgery have occurred, the long-term benefits of combined surgery have yet to be demonstrated. Ethical issues surround the use of antimetabolites.

Background: The outcomes of pediatric glaucoma suspects with a history of ocular trauma remains unknown; we describe the rate of conversion to glaucoma of this population of patients at a research-intensive academic center.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective case series of pediatric patients with a history of open- or closed-globe trauma who were being monitored as pediatric glaucoma suspects at the Wilmer Eye Institute between 2005 and 2016.

Results: A total of 62 eyes from 62 patients with a history of ocular trauma were identified with a median age at presentation of 9.

Purpose: Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is a complication of retinal detachment which requires multiple vitreoretinal surgical interventions and frequent use of oil endotamponade. In this study, we conducted an in-depth analysis of complications associated with the use of heavy silicone oil in the management of inferior PVR.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study of 20 eyes that underwent vitrectomy for inferior PVR with use of heavy silicone oil (Densiron 68) between March 2021 and October 2022 at Oxford Eye Hospital.

A meta-analysis of intravitreal ranibizumab versus laser photocoagulation for the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity.

Ophthalmol Retina

January 2025

Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada; John and Liz Tory Eye Centre, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, Canada. Electronic address:

Purpose: Laser photocoagulation (LPC) has been a traditional treatment for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). However, intravitreal anti-VEGF agents such as bevacizumab and ranibizumab (IVR) have also been increasingly used. This meta-analysis aims to rigorously compare IVR to LPC in the treatment of ROP.

Purpose: To assess the safety and efficacy of a modified suprachoroidal silicone tube (SST) shunt in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and pseudo-exfoliative glaucoma (PXG) in this experimental study.

Methods: In this single-center, retrospective longitudinal data analysis 66 eyes of 59 patients having POAG and PXG were included and treated with modified SST shunt in combination with cataract or as a stand-alone procedure. Pre- and postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), C/D ratio and ocular adverse events (AEs) were assessed in all participants.

Introduction: A population-based survey of the prevalence and causes of blindness and vision impairment among people 50 years and older living in the State of Qatar.

Methods: A Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) methodology, applied from May 2022 to June 2023, utilized stratified two-stage cluster random sampling to select 5060 persons 50 years and older resident in Qatar from 145 communities chosen by probability proportional to size. Communities were stratified by Qatari and non-Qatari nationality.
