Not all surgical patients need the utmost in sophisticated cardiac monitoring. For those who do, however, there is a considerable gain in morbidity and mortality reduction. In this paper, we outline the place of cardiac monitoring in the spectrum of cardiac disease and present cases illustrating its usefulness in both preoperative and postoperative settings. The significant capacity of cardiac monitoring to determine very poor risks for major surgery candidates is also determined.

Steatohepatitis-induced vascular niche alterations promote melanoma metastasis.

Cancer Metab

January 2025

Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Allergology, University Medical Center and Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University, Theodor-Kutzer-Ufer 1-3, Mannheim, 68167, Germany.

Background: In malignant melanoma, liver metastases significantly reduce survival, even despite highly effective new therapies. Given the increase in metabolic liver diseases such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), this study investigated the impact of liver sinusoidal endothelial cell (LSEC)-specific alterations in MASLD/MASH on hepatic melanoma metastasis.

Methods: Mice were fed a choline-deficient L-amino acid-defined (CDAA) diet for ten weeks to induce MASH-associated liver fibrosis, or a CDAA diet or a high fat diet (HFD) for shorter periods of time to induce early steatosis-associated alterations.

Background: Early and continuous exposure to painful stimuli in premature infants leads to short-and long-term complications. Listening to white noise is an accessible and inexpensive non-invasive method that can be used as a safe nursing intervention in hospitals. This study aimed to assess white noise's effect on premature Infants' physiological parameters during peripheral intravenous catheter insertion.

Evaluation of parotid and submandibular salivary glands with ultrasonography in diabetic patients.

Clin Oral Investig

January 2025

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Faculty of Dentistry, Zonguldak Bulent Ecevıt University, Zonguldak, Turkey.

Objectives: The main symptom of diabetes mellitus (DM) is hyperglycaemia, and patients with DM often have microvascular complications, such as retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy; macrovascular complications, such as coronary heart disease, peripheral arterial disease and cerebrovascular disease; and oral complications, such as xerostomia, hyposalivation and periodontal disease. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the submandibular and parotid glands in type 2 DM patients and healthy individuals and to determine the changes in the salivary glands caused by diabetes.

Materials And Methods: In this study, the salivary glands of 100 patients (50 individuals with type 2 DM and 50 healthy individuals) were evaluated by ultrasonography (US).

Vascular calcification(VC) significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular events, leading to thickening of the myocardium and arteries, coronary heart disease, heart failure, and potentially triggering myocardial infarction and sudden cardiac death. Although VC is a reversible process, there are currently no methods or medications in clinical practice that can completely reverse or cure it. The current treatment strategies primarily focus on slowing the progression of VC and exploring new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, making the identification of early diagnostic markers for VC particularly important.
