Introduction: Lymphedema, a debilitating characterized by localized fluid retention and tissue swelling, results from abnormalities in the lymphatic system. In the case of primary lymphedema, this condition is attributed to malformations in lymphatic vessels or nodes, and it is marked by a relentless progression leading to irreversible tissue fibrosis after repetitive inflammation. Incremental shuttle walking test for calf muscle oxygenation assessment in peripheral arterial disease: a cross-sectional study.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Graduate Program in Rehabilitation Sciences, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Avenida Presidente Antônio Carlos, 6627 - Pampulha, Belo Horizonte, CEP 31270-901, MG, Brazil.

People with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and intermittent claudication (IC) experience impaired walking due to an imbalance between muscle oxygen supply and demand during exercise. Studies with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) during treadmill tests reveal notable tissue deoxygenation with slow recovery. This cross-sectional study aimed to compare behavior of calf muscle oxygenation during the incremental shuttle walking test (ISWT) with a continuous treadmill test (3.

PROFOUND HYPOGLYCEMIA AND BLOOD GLUCOSE TESTING METHODOLOGIES IN FLORIDA MANATEES () PRESENTED TO A CRITICAL CARE CENTER.

J Zoo Wildl Med

December 2024

Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL 32608.

Florida manatees () continue to experience pressure from various stressors that frequently result in the need for rescue and veterinary assistance. Interestingly, a subset of rescued manatees in critical condition exhibits profound hypoglycemia. The goals of this study were to enhance our understanding of this important aspect of manatee care by 1) characterizing the clinical presentation and factors associated with manatees that present with profound hypoglycemia, and 2) assessing agreement across blood glucose testing modalities [glucometer (whole blood), in-house bench-top analyzer (whole blood), a point of care analyzer (whole blood), and a local human hospital laboratory analyzer (serum)].
