A simple classification of lymphedema is presented that is based solely on clinical observation. It is suggested that the universal use of such a classification would facilitate the collection of meaningful epidemiologic data and would make possible understandable comparisons of the effectiveness of various treatment modalities.

We currently perform noncontrast lymphatic ultrasound, which has a higher resolution and is less invasive than contrast lymphatic ultrasound. This study aimed to clarify the usefulness of screening lymphatic ultrasound (SLUS) to evaluate lymphatic function. A retrospective study was conducted on 22 patients with leg lymphedema.

Background: Lymphedema represents a frequent cause of disability for patients undergoing oncological treatments and, being a chronic, non-reversible pathology, requires targeted and continuous rehabilitation treatments. To date, the studies available on the use of ultrasound in patients with lymphedema mainly report descriptive data; therefore, with this study, we wanted to describe in a more objective way the typical ultrasound alterations found in these patients, measuring the thickness of the different superficial structures, and defining subcutis echogenicity.
Methods: 14 patients affected by secondary lymphedema of the upper limbs were enrolled in this cross-sectional observational study (12 had breast cancer and 2 with melanoma as their primary diagnosis).

Lymphedema occurs when the lymphatic system is malformed, leaking or is damaged by infection or cancer treatment. Enlarged extremities due to extensive fluid retention and adipose tissue deposition, recurrent cellulitis, and the requirement for hard-to-wear compression garments lead to impaired limb function and decreased quality of life. This narrative review aims to elucidate classification, diagnostic tools, and conservative management strategies leading the path to patient selection for microsurgical reconstructive procedures or volume reduction procedures.

Breast lymphedema is a common sequela of breast conservation that delays healing and reduces quality of life. No rigorous classification system exists for this condition. We explored approaches for classifying breast lymph-edema based on breast ultrasound, physical exam, and patient-reported outcomes.
