As in the development of many human cancers, in a transgenic mouse model of beta-cell carcinogenesis (Rip1Tag2), expression of neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) changes from the 120-kDa isoform in normal tissue to the 140/180-kDa isoforms in tumors. NCAM-deficient RiplTag2 mice, generated by crossing Rip1Tag2 mice with NCAM knockout mice, develop metastases, a tumor stage that is not seen in normal Rip1Tag2 mice. In contrast, overexpression of NCAM 120 in NCAM-deficient Rip1Tag2 mice prevents tumor metastasis. The results indicate that the loss of NCAM-mediated cell adhesion is one rate-limiting step in the actual metastatic dissemination of beta tumor cells.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with etiologies related to genetics, immunity, and the environment. It is characterized by excessive proliferation of keratinocytes and infiltration of inflammatory immune cells. Glycosylation is a post-translational modification of proteins that plays important roles in cell adhesion, signal transduction, and immune cell activation.

Cd99 molecule-like 2 (Cd99l2) is a type I transmembrane protein that plays a role in the transmigration of leukocytes across vascular endothelial cells. Despite its high expression in the brain, the role of Cd99l2 remains elusive. We find that Cd99l2 is expressed primarily in neurons and positively regulates neurite outgrowth and the development of excitatory synapses.

SUMMARY is a major human pathogen. It can cause many types of infections, in particular bacteremia, which frequently leads to infective endocarditis, osteomyelitis, sepsis, and other debilitating diseases. The development of secondary infections is based on the bacterium's ability to associate with endothelial cells lining blood vessels.

Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is an inflammatory thyroid disease characterized by neck pain, tenderness, general symptoms, and thyroid dysfunction. Despite gaining new insights into the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and treatment of SAT in recent years, the exact pathogenesis and determinants of its clinical progression remain unclear. Here, we profiled thyroid in situ protein alterations in fine needle aspiration biopsy samples from SAT patients using proteomic analysis and uncovered 57 differentially abundant proteins.

Differential expression of osteoblast-like cells on self-organized titanium dioxide nanotubes.

J Dent Sci

Division for Globalization Initiative, Liaison Center for Innovative Dentistry, Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry, Sendai, Japan.

Background/purpose: Titanium dioxide nanotube (TNT) structures have been shown to enhance the early osseointegration of dental implants. Nevertheless, the optimal nanotube diameter for promoting osteogenesis remains unclear due to variations in cell types and manufacture of nanotubes. This study aimed to evaluate the differences in MC3T3-E1 and Saos-2 cells behavior on nanotubes of varying diameters.
