Background: A link ("naso-bronchial reflex") between nasal and bronchial reactivity seems to exist. The effect of nonspecific nasal challenge (standing for the exposure to irritative stimuli at the workplace) on lung function indices and nonspecific bronchial reactivity is not known.

Methods: In 80 healthy workers (age: 36.0 +/- 8.6 years) continuously exposed to acceptable levels of different respiratory irritants (for more than 2 years) nasal challenge was performed by spraying doubling concentrations of histamine (0.0625-16.0 mg/mL, doses of histamine: 7.8 micrograms-2.08 mg) into each nostril. Before and immediately after nasal challenge spirometry and the bronchoprovocation test with histamine (0.5-128 mg/mL) was performed.

Results: Although nasal challenge with histamine had not reduced airway caliber (before nasal challenge vs. following nasal challenge: FEV1 3.8 +/- 0.8 vs. 3.7 +/- 0.8 L, and MEF50 4.3 +/- 1.4 vs. 4.3 +/- 1.4 L/s, mean +/- SD, respectively), it had significantly reduced nonspecific bronchial reactivity in 30.2% of the irritant-exposed subjects.

Conclusions: Nasal challenge with histamine decreases nonspecific bronchial reactivity in workers occupationally exposed to respiratory irritants. Thus, a methodological implication would be that these two tests should not be performed consecutively in less than 2 hr in the same subjects.

This study aimed to identify if sensor technology could be used to detect sickness-type signs (caused by a live vaccine) in laying hens compared to physiological and clinical sign scoring and behaviour observation. The experiment comprised 5 replicate batches (4 hens and 12 days per batch) using previously non-vaccinated hens ( = 20). Hens were moved on day 1 to a large experimental room with various designated zones (e.

Neethling Strain-Based Homologous Live Attenuated LSDV Vaccines Provide Protection Against Infection with a Clade 2.5 Recombinant LSDV Strain.

Vaccines (Basel)

December 2024

Sciensano (Belgium), Service of Exotic and Vector-Borne Diseases (ExoVec), Groeselenberg 99, B-1180 Ukkel, Belgium.

Background: Vaccination is the main control measure to prevent Lumpy skin disease (LSD), and Neethling-based homologous vaccines have been shown to be safe and effective against infection with classical clade 1.2 strains. In 2017, recombinant clade 2 LSDV strains originating from a badly produced and insufficiently controlled vaccine were first detected in Russia.

State Key Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndrome, Department of Neurology, Guangdong Provincial Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, Guangzhou, China.

Background: A stable and reproducible experimental bacterial pneumonia model postintracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is necessary to help investigating the pathogenesis and novel treatments of Stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP).

Aim: To establish a Gram-negative bacterial pneumonia-complicating ICH rat model and an acute lung injury (ALI)-complicating ICH rat model.

Methods: We established two standardized models of post-ICH pneumonia by nasal inoculation with () or intratracheal inoculation with lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

Chondrocutaneous Custom-made Graft for Upper Lateral and Alar Cartilage Nose Reconstruction: The T Graft.

Arch Plast Surg

January 2025

Department of Experimental and Clinical Medicine, Clinic of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Marche Polytechnic University Medical School, Ancona, Italy.

Upper lateral cartilage and alar cartilage nose reconstruction secondary to failed aesthetic procedure or tumor excision, surely represents a reconstructive challenge for plastic surgeons, because of the support needed and for the function of the internal nasal valve (INV). Several scientific publications deal with internal nasal reconstructive techniques, including simple homologous or heterologous tissue grafts. We describe a new hybrid chondrocutaneous graft used for reconstruction of the upper lateral cartilage and a portion of the alar cartilage (cephalic part), excised with the adherent nasal mucosa (in correspondence with INV), included in the tumor mass.

Background: Oral Mucosal Immunotherapy (OMIT) uses a specifically formulated toothpaste to deliver allergenic proteins to immunologically active areas of the oral cavity. This represents a new delivery mechanism with several features designed to improve food allergy desensitization. OMIT presents advantages over other approaches to allergy immunotherapy due to its targeted delivery and simplified administration.
