Aim: This paper sets out to investigate the theories and practices of healthcare appraisal systems, with particular emphasis on the appraisal of healthcare educators.

Background: The rhetoric used to inform appraisal theories, systems and practices claims to measure human attributes, although this is rarely achieved in reality.

Method: A national survey of healthcare educators is used to inform, analyse and evaluate the literature pertaining to professional appraisal theories and systems.

Findings: The main theme to emerge centres around the inadequacies of current appraisal systems and practices.

Conclusion: Nurse educators and healthcare professionals should be creative and proactive in their approaches to the appraisal process, to enable more effective and meaningful appraisal processes and outcomes.

Although writing feedback is widely believed to elicit a range of emotions, studies on the emotional experiences of L2 students with this teaching and learning tool, as well as their regulation strategies, remain largely underexplored. Drawing on the analytical framework of academic emotions from the perspective of positive psychology, this study examines two Chinese as foreign language (CFL) students' emotional reactions to their teacher's oral and written feedback and their emotion regulation strategies. The main data includes interviews, retrospective oral reports, students' reflection journals, academic writings, and teacher feedback.
