This study explores the bubble nucleation process and heat transfer characteristics on nanostructured solid surfaces with mixed-wettable pillars using molecular dynamics simulations. Five different surfaces were designed by varying the wettability of the central pillars while keeping the lateral pillars hydrophilic. The nucleation behavior of argon bubbles was observed to differ significantly across these surfaces due to the combined effects of nanostructuring and mixed wettability.

Controlling the Hierarchical Assembly of DNA-Based Hexagonal Microstructures.

December 2024

Department of Engineering Science, Graduate School of Informatics and Engineering, The University of Electro-Communications, 1-5-1 Chofugaoka, Chofu, Tokyo, 182-8585, Japan.

This paper discusses the controlled morphology of hierarchical liquid crystalline DNA assemblies. Through a process of heating and slow cooling, double-stranded DNAs (dsDNAs) having 23 complementary bases and two base overhangs (a pair of 25mer oligonucleotides) spontaneously assemble into micro-sized hexagonal platelets in a solution containing poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and salt. Remarkably, the addition of a shorter dsDNA with AA/TT overhangs (a pair of 18mer oligonucleotides) to a PEG-salt solution of 25mer DNA with AA/TT overhangs results in the formation of molecular tubes, each with a central blockage.

Chronic heat stress is capable of reducing the growth performance, causing damage to the liver structure, and altering the liver glucose metabolism and lipid metabolism in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides L.).

Key Aboratory of Tropical and Subtropical Fishery Resource Application and Cultivation, China Ministry of Agriculture, Pearl River Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fisheries Sciences, Guangzhou, 510380, China.

High temperatures cause abnormal energy metabolism and inhibit the growth of fish in aquaculture. However, the mechanism of energy metabolism under chronic heat stress is still unknown. In this study, largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides, LMB) was treated with 25℃, 29℃, and 33℃ for 8 weeks.

As a new member of the super graphene-skinned materials family, graphene-skinned alumina material integrates the excellent characteristics of graphene and alumina, with characteristics like high electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity, light weight, and has broad application prospects in integrated circuits, electric heating, wind power deicing. Based on density functional theory, the cracking, migration of major carbon species, nucleation, and edge growth of ethylene and acetylene on the α-AlO(0001) plane are investigated. The results show that: 1) α-AlO substrate has metal-like catalytic activity, the pyrolysis products of CH and CH carbon sources are CH and CH, respectively, and the main active species on the substrate surface are CH; 2) The adsorption properties and nucleation rate of CH on the substrate surface are better than CH, but CH is more difficult to migrate than CH, and their migration energy barriers are 2.

Clavicle emergency fixation can prevent fractured end from piercing heart and lung organs, which is crucial for wounded life. Clavicle with complex structure, great individual differences, and adjacent to important organs, which places high-requirements on performance of fixation materials. Developing advanced clavicle fixation material is a prominent hot-topic in the field of emergency-engineering.
