Vibrating probes when immersed in a fluid can provide powerful tools for characterising the surrounding medium. In superfluid He-B, a condensate of Cooper pairs, the dissipation arising from the scattering of quasiparticle excitations from a mechanical oscillator provides the basis of extremely sensitive thermometry and bolometry at sub-millikelvin temperatures. The unique properties of the Andreev reflection process in this condensate also assist by providing a significantly enhanced dissipation.

Neutron detection is nowadays mostly based on He gas detectors, but its shortage and the continuous upgrades of the neutron facilities require new devices to perform experiments with maximum performances. This work presents a new detector based on the Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) combined with several boron layers. This detector combines the features of GEM technology with the properties of boron as a neutron converter and the device is produced to sustain high neutron fluxes with high detection efficiency.

Improved two-body and three-body potentials for helium have been used to calculate from first principles the third density and acoustic virial coefficients for both 4He and 3He. For the third density virial coefficient C(T), uncertainties have been reduced by a factor of 4-5 compared to the previous state of the art; the accuracy of first-principles C(T) now exceeds that of the best experiments by more than two orders of magnitude. The range of calculations has been extended to temperatures as low as 0.

The limited availability of conventional He proportional counters provides impetus for developing novel neutron detectors. As a candidate, lithium-6-loaded liquid scintillators with neutron/gamma pulse shape discrimination (n-γ PSD) capabilities have been developed. However, the trade-off relationship between the Li-loading amount and scintillation light yield is a significant problem.

High-performance fibre-reinforced concrete (HPFRC), a type of cementitious composite material known for its exceptional mechanical performance, has widespread applications in structures exposed to severe dynamic loading conditions. However, understanding nonlinear HPFRC fracture behaviour, particularly under high strain rates, remains challenging given the complexities of assessment procedures and cost-intensive nature of experiments. This study presents an interpretable framework for modelling and analysing HPFRC fracture strength at high strain rates.
