Thermal Behavior of -Octanol and Related Ether Alcohols.

J Chem Eng Data

January 2025

Institute of Physical Chemistry, Technical University Darmstadt, Peter-Grünberg-Straße 8, Darmstadt D-64287, Germany.

The thermal behavior of -octanol and related ether alcohols has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The melting point, heat of fusion, and isobaric heat capacities of -octanol obtained from the DSC measurements are in good agreement with literature values. The ether alcohols display kinetic barriers for forming a solid phase during cooldown.

Article Synopsis
  • CRAFT is a fusion technology facility in China focused on developing and validating fusion technology through methods like neutral beam injection.
  • A new negative ion based neutral beam injector is being created with a beam energy of 400 keV, utilizing a core snubber for surge suppression in its power supply system.
  • The design of the core snubber involves careful consideration of transmission line characteristics, and initial testing shows it effectively suppresses peak ignition current and oscillation.

Plastic damage of REBCO (REBaCuO, where RE=rare earth) coated conductors by screening current stress (SCS) is a significant concern for ultra-high-field superconducting magnets. Indeed, the third Little Big Coil (LBC3), a REBCO magnet that generated a record, high field of 45.5 T, showed wavy plastic damage produced by excess SCS in all pancakes except two made with single-slit conductors having their slit edges pointing inward towards the magnet center.

Heat accumulation due to repetitive simple laser processing paths during building up a three-dimensional structure is a well-known issue that needs to be settled to reduce the excessively high residual stress and thermal deformation in a powder bed fusion (PBF) additive manufacturing process. Because of the dependency of laser path on the thermal dispersion, it is essential to analyze the heat accumulation phenomenon during laser processing. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis based on the volume of fraction method is used to optimize the laser path for minimizing the local heating up in the PBF process.

Collisionless shocks are ubiquitous in space and astrophysical plasmas, and they are essential dynamical features of these systems. Lacking Coulomb collisions, these shocks are mediated by the anomalous dissipation provided by nonlinear plasma instabilities. By numerically resolving the structure of a steady-state, ion gyroviscous shock, we show that ion gyroviscosity, alone, can produce weak (M≲1.
