Effects of High-Intensity Swimming Interval Training on Area, Perimeter, Circularity Index and Phenotype of Cardiac Mitochondrial Ultrastructure in Sprague Dawley Rats.

Life (Basel)

August 2024

Laboratorio Fisiología del Ejercicio, Departamento de Ciencias Básicas, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de La Frontera, Temuco 4811230, Chile.

Physical inactivity impairs health by increasing morbidity. In childhood, modifiable risk factors associated with cardiovascular pathologies and related to mitochondrial function and structure are initiated by physical inactivity. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of high-intensity swimming interval training (HIIT-swim) on cardiac mitochondrial ultrastructure in young Sprague Dawley rats compared with a sedentary group.

Article Synopsis
  • Tarsocrural osteochondrosis (OCD) is a common developmental disease in young Standardbred horses, leading to joint swelling without lameness, and varies in fragment size and location.* -
  • Researchers collected data from 79 horses to examine how the location and characteristics of osteochondral fragments affect joint swelling and relate to markers of cartilage damage and inflammation.* -
  • Results showed that unstable fragments located at the medial malleolus caused the most joint swelling, and higher levels of specific markers indicated inflammation and cartilage degradation were present in OCD cases.*

Evidence for multi-fragmentation and mass shedding of boulders on rubble-pile binary asteroid system (65803) Didymos.

Nat Commun

July 2024

Dipartimento di Scienze e Tecnologie Aerospaziali, Politecnico di Milano-Bovisa Campus, Milano, Italy.

Asteroids smaller than 10 km are thought to be rubble piles formed from the reaccumulation of fragments produced in the catastrophic disruption of parent bodies. Ground-based observations reveal that some of these asteroids are today binary systems, in which a smaller secondary orbits a larger primary asteroid. However, how these asteroids became binary systems remains unclear.

The fluoroquinolones ciprofloxacin, danofloxacin, enoxacin, levofloxacin and lomefloxacin, occur in water bodies worldwide and therefore pose a threat to the aquatic environment. Advanced purification procedures, such as electrochemical oxidation, may act as a remedy since they contribute to eliminating contaminants and prevent micropollutants from entering open water bodies. By electrochemical treatment in a micro-flow reactor equipped with a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode, the fluoroquinolones were efficiently degraded.
