Preoperative iron therapy: Where are we?

Best Pract Res Clin Anaesthesiol

December 2023

School of Medicine, The University of Western Australia, Perth, Western Australia, Australia.

Preoperative anemia affects one-third of patients undergoing major surgery and is associated with worse perioperative and postoperative outcomes; including length of hospital stay, allogeneic blood transfusion, morbidity, and mortality. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia, and associative data suggests that preoperative correction of iron deficiency anemia could improve postoperative patient outcomes. However, data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) do not appear to support the routine use of iron therapy to treat preoperative anemia.

Guarding Drinking Water Safety against Harmful Algal Blooms: Could UV/Cl Treatment Be the Answer?

Environ Sci Technol

January 2025

Environmental Engineering and Science, Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering (ChEE), University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio 45221, United States.

Frequent and severe occurrences of harmful algal blooms increasingly threaten human health by the release of microcystins (MCs). Urgent attention is directed toward managing MCs, as evidenced by rising HAB-related do not drink/do not boil advisories due to unsafe MC levels in drinking water. UV/chlorine treatment, in which UV light is applied simultaneously with chlorine, showed early promise for effectively degrading MC-LR to values below the World Health Organization's guideline limits.

The physical process in the macroscopic world unfolds along a single time direction, while the evolution of a quantum system is reversible in principle. How to recover a quantum system to its past state is a complex issue of both fundamental and practical interests. In this article, we experimentally demonstrate a novel method for recovering the state in quantum walks (QWs), also known as full-state revival.

Morphologic study of patent ductus arteriosus based on computed tomography data in 25 dogs.

Front Vet Sci

December 2024

Department of Veterinary Clinical Science, College of Veterinary Medicine and Research Institute for Veterinary Science, Seoul National University, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Introduction: The objective of this study is to analyze the morphology and measurement dimensions of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) based on computed tomography images.

Methods: The present study retrospectively evaluated computed tomography angiography data from 25 client-owned dogs diagnosed with PDA. PDA was reconstructed based on the central axis and the minimum diameter, ampulla diameter, angle, ampulla cross-section area, and length values were measured at specific measurement sites.

Objective: To explore the potential correlation between gallstone disease (GSD) prevalence and circadian syndrome (CircS).

Methods: The cross-sectional research utilized data spanning 2017 to March 2020, sourced from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The GSD data were collected via questionnaires, with appropriate sample weights applied to ensure the study population was representative.
