Attaining sub-Kelvin temperatures remains technologically challenging and often relies on the scarce resource He, unless employing adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration. Herein, the active coolant typically consists of weakly coupled paramagnetic ions, whose magnetic interaction strengths are comparable in energy to the relevant temperature regime of cooling. Such interactions depend strongly on inter-ion distances, fundamentally hindering the realization of dense coolants for sub-Kelvin refrigeration.

Optical pumping on the 23S-23P transition (1083 nm) of metastable 3He or 4He atoms is used for science and applications. Gas is usually enclosed in elongated cells with lengths ranging from several centimeters to several meters for efficient absorption. Good magnetic-field homogeneity is needed for weak diffusion-induced relaxation and long nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal lifetimes.

The recently discovered superconductor UTe is a promising candidate for spin-triplet superconductors, but the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter remains highly controversial. Here, we determine the superconducting gap structure by the thermal conductivity of ultraclean UTe single crystals. We find that the -axis thermal conductivity divided by temperature κ/ in zero-temperature limit is vanishingly small for both magnetic field ‖ and ‖ axes up to / ∼ 0.

Rationale And Objectives: Ex-smokers without spirometry or CT evidence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) but with mildly abnormal diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DL) are at higher risk of developing COPD. It remains difficult to make clinical management decisions for such ex-smokers without other objective assessments consistent with COPD. Hence, our objective was to develop a machine-learning and CT texture-analysis pipeline to dichotomize ex-smokers with normal and abnormal DL (DL≥75% and DL<75%).
