We investigated interfacial water, formed by adsorption or phase separation (prewetting transition), on a silica surface in water-cyclohexane binary liquids using a combination of colloidal probe atomic force microscopy (AFM) and sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. At 33 ± 9 ppm water, the long-range attraction extending to 19.4 ± 2.

An interfacial thermodynamic model predicts that the interplay of grain boundary (GB) premelting, prewetting, and retrograde solubility in a binary alloy can lead to a decrease in the GB diffusivity with increasing temperature. This counterintuitive prediction is experimentally confirmed for a single-phase, Mo +0.5 at.

We investigate the interfacial phase behavior of a binary fluid mixture composed of repulsive point Yukawa particles. Using a simple approximation for the Helmholtz free energy functional, which yields the random phase approximation for the pair direct correlation functions, we calculate the equilibrium fluid density profiles of the two species of particles adsorbed at a planar wall. We show that for a particular choice (repulsive exponential) of the wall potentials and the fluid pair-potential parameters, the Euler-Lagrange equations for the equilibrium fluid density profiles may be transformed into a single ordinary differential equation and the profiles obtained by a simple quadrature.

The possibility of wetting phase transitions in Bose-Einstein condensed gases is predicted on the basis of Gross-Pitaevskii theory. The surface of a binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates can undergo a first-order wetting phase transition upon varying the interparticle interactions, using, e.g.

We study the wetting behavior of a symmetrical binary fluid below the demixing temperature at a nonselective attractive wall. Although it demixes in the bulk, a sufficiently thin liquid film remains mixed. On approaching liquid vapor coexistence, however, the thickness of the liquid film increases and it may demix and then wet the substrate.
