Background: Falls on stairs are a major cause of severe injuries among older adults, with stair descent posing significantly greater risks than ascent. Variations in stair descent phenotypes may reflect differences in physical function and biomechanical stability, and their identification may prevent falls.

Aims: This study aims to classify stair descent phenotypes in older adults and investigate the biomechanical and physical functional differences between these phenotypes using hierarchical cluster analysis.

Understanding and modeling of gas puff injection for diagnostic purposes.

Rev Sci Instrum

January 2025

Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik, Garching 85748, Germany.

This article presents an experimental setup capable of providing high spatial and temporal resolution measurements of neutral gas puff injection using a glow discharge to excite the neutral gas and an ultra-high-speed camera to record the emitted light. Using the proposed setup, the shape and propagation velocity of a thermal deuterium gas puff at 1 bar have been measured. The cloud has a conical shape and a propagation velocity of vprop = 1870 ± 270 m/s.

The climate impact of data centers is expected to increase due to rising demand for information and communication technology services. At the same time, the European Union aims for climate neutral data centers by 2030. To map potential developments of emissions associated with data centers to the year 2030, we develop a generic data center greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory in accordance with the GHG protocol.

Laser absorption spectroscopy (LAS) is a well-established measurement technique for quantitative chemical speciation in a combustion environment. However, LAS measurement of nitric oxide (NO) in ammonia flames has never been reported in the literature. This is despite the community's recent strong interest in carbon-neutral ammonia combustion and the associated NO formation problem.

Visible-light integrated photonics serve applications inaccessible to conventional (C- and O-band) silicon photonics, including trapped-ion and neutral atom quantum experiments, biophotonics, and displays. Despite demonstrations of increasingly advanced functionalities and levels of integration, the development of low-power, monolithically integrated, visible-light switches and phase shifters remains an outstanding challenge. Here, we demonstrate an integrated photonic, electrostatic MEMS-actuated Mach-Zehnder interferometer optical switch for the visible spectrum.
