Self-organized contact line instabilities (CLI) of a macroscopic liquid crystal (LC) droplet can be an ingenious pathway to generate a large collection of miniaturized LC drops. For example, when a larger drop of volatile solvent (e.g.

Topological design of π electrons in zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) leads to a wealth of magnetic quantum phenomena and exotic quantum phases. Symmetric ZGNRs typically show antiferromagnetically coupled spin-ordered edge states. Eliminating cross-edge magnetic coupling in ZGNRs not only enables the realization of a class of ferromagnetic quantum spin chains, enabling the exploration of quantum spin physics and entanglement of multiple qubits in the one-dimensional limit, but also establishes a long-sought-after carbon-based ferromagnetic transport channel, pivotal for ultimate scaling of GNR-based quantum electronics.

The altered solvation structures and dynamical properties of water molecules at the metal/water interfaces will affect the elementary step of an electrochemical process. Simulating the interfacial structure and dynamics with a realistic representation will provide us with a solid foundation to make a connection with experimental studies. To surmount the accuracy-efficiency tradeoff and provide dynamical insights, we use state-of-the-art machine learning molecular dynamics (MLMD) to study the water exchange dynamics, which are fundamental to adsorption/desorption and electrochemical reaction steps.

Fe-N-C catalysts, with a planar D4h symmetric FeN4 structure, show promising as noble metal-free oxygen reduction reaction catalysts. Nonetheless, the highly symmetric structure restricts the effective manipulation of its geometric and electronic structures, impeding further enhancements in oxygen reduction reaction performance. Here, a high proportion of asymmetric edge-carbon was successfully introduced into Fe-N-C catalysts through morphology engineering, enabling the precise modulation of the FeN4 active site.

Non-Hermitian topological photonics plays a key role in bridging topological matter with gain and loss engineering in optics. Here we report the experimental observation of the break of chiral currents in a Hall ladder from the non-Hermiticity by constructing synthetic frequency dimension in two rings, where currents on both legs of the ladder co-propagate in the same direction. The origin of such phenomena is resulted from the interplay between the effective magnetic flux and the on-site gain and loss.
