Based on the symmetric initiation mechanism of double-wing cracks in coal rock mass induced by high-pressure electro-recoil water pressure, fracturing experiments have been performed on coal rock mass under different water pressures and discharge conditions using high-voltage electric pulse hydraulic fracturing devices. Combined with CT scans, the crack spatial distribution inside the post-break coal rock mass was analyzed and found that the edge of the water injection hole is prone to produce double-wing cracks along the drilling hole diameter. ABAQUS is used to verify the physical test and extend the test conditions, the geometric parameter change, morphological expansion rule and crack initiation mechanism of double-wing crack in coal rock mass under different discharge conditions and ground stress conditions are studied.

Nonlinear interaction of an acoustical wave with a counter-propagating weak shock.

J Acoust Soc Am

December 2024

PIMM Laboratory, UMR 8006, Arts et Metiers Institute of Technology (ENSAM), CNRS, Cnam, 151 boulevard de l'Hôpital, 75013, Paris, France.

During its propagation, a shock wave may come across and interact with different perturbations, including acoustical waves. While this issue has been the subject of many studies, the particular acoustic-acoustic interaction between a weak shock and a sound wave has been very scarcely investigated. Here, a theory describing the encounter of those two waves is developed, up to second- and third-order.

Advancements in Acoustic Cavitation Modelling: Progress, Challenges, and Future Directions in Sonochemical Reactor Design.

Ultrason Sonochem

January 2025

School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University Malaysia, Selangor Darul Ehsan 43900, Malaysia. Electronic address:

This review provides a comprehensive overview of ultrasonic wave propagation, with a primary focus on high-power ultrasound systems where cavitation bubbles are likely to occur. The review is structured to guide readers through the historical development of cavitation models, from early works such as the Rayleigh-Plesset equation to more advanced numerical approaches. It explores the dynamics of cavitation bubbles, their physical effects, and the key factors influencing bubble formation, growth, and collapse.

Nuclear explosion in a densely populated area is the worst that can happen to any country in the world due to enormous loss of life, property and severe economic damage. Nuclear explosions immediately cause radiological damage and destruction of infrastructure. This hydro-magnetic shock propagation due to blast gives rise to simultaneous signals around the world.

X-ray phase-contrast imaging of strong shocks on OMEGA EP.

Rev Sci Instrum

November 2024

York Plasma Institute, School of Physics, Engineering and Technology, University of York, York YO10 5DD, United Kingdom.

The ongoing improvement in laser technology and target fabrication is opening new possibilities for diagnostic development. An example is x-ray phase-contrast imaging (XPCI), which serves as an advanced x-ray imaging diagnostic in laser-driven experiments. In this work, we present the results of the XPCI platform that was developed at the OMEGA EP Laser-Facility to study multi-Mbar single and double shocks produced using a kilojoule laser driver.
