Unveiling heterointerface activation effects with different titanium dioxide crystal phases for electrocatalytic nitrate-to-ammonia reduction.

J Hazard Mater

Nitrate pollution poses severe risks to aquatic ecosystems and human health. The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NITRR) offers a promising environmental and economic solution for nitrate pollution treatment and nitrogen source recovery; however, it continues to experience limited efficiency in neutral electrolytes. This study explores the heterointerface activation effects of TiO/CuO heterogeneous catalysts with rutile (R-TiO) and anatase (A-TiO) phases and reveals that R-TiO is an active crystal phase with high nitrate reduction performance.

Enhanced energy storage in antiferroelectrics via antipolar frustration.

Nature

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of New Ceramics and Fine Processing, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.

Dielectric-based energy storage capacitors characterized with fast charging and discharging speed and reliability play a vital role in cutting-edge electrical and electronic equipment. In pursuit of capacitor miniaturization and integration, dielectrics must offer high energy density and efficiency. Antiferroelectrics with antiparallel dipole configurations have been of significant interest for high-performance energy storage due to their negligible remanent polarization and high maximum polarization in the field-induced ferroelectric state.

Ion beam induced secondary electron tomography of acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate/polycarbonate polymer blends for fused filament fabrication and injection moulding.

Departamento de Ciencia de los Materiales e Ingeniería Metalúrgica y Química Orgánica, IMEYMAT, Universidad de Cádiz, Campus Río San Pedro, 11510, Puerto Real, Cádiz, Spain.

Polymer blending is an interesting strategy to broaden the combination of properties available for a variety of applications. To understand the behaviour of the new materials obtained as well as the influence of the fabrication parameters used, methods to analyse the distribution of polymers in the blend with resolution below the micrometer are required. In this work, we demonstrate the capability of focused ion beam (FIB) tomography to provide 3D information of the polymer distribution in objects obtained by blending acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate (ASA) with polycarbonate (PC) (50 wt%), fabricated by Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) and by Injection Moulding (IM).

Cadmium-cardiolipin disruption of respirasome assembly and redox balance through mitochondrial membrane rigidification.

J Lipid Res

January 2025

Physiology and Pathophysiology of Cells and Membranes, Medical School OWL, Bielefeld University, Bielefeld, Germany. Electronic address:

The environmental pollutant cadmium (Cd) poses a threat to human health through consumption of contaminated foodstuffs culminating in chronic nephrotoxicity. Mitochondrial dysfunction and excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) are key to Cd cellular toxicity. Cd-lipid interactions have been less considered.

Ficus Carica extract (FC) is a natural herb that has received a lot of interest in cancer treatment due to its potential anticancer activities against various malignancies. However, due to FC's low bioavailability and low solubility, its clinical use as an anti-cancer medicine is constrained. The current study aimed to prepare FC-loaded PLGA nanoparticles (NPs) for cancer treatment.
