Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are responsible for the premature deaths of more than 38 million people each year, making them the leading cause of the global burden of disease, accounting for 70% of global mortality. The majority of these deaths are caused by cardiovascular diseases. The risk of NCDs is closely related to exposure to environmental stressors such as air pollution, noise pollution, artificial light at night, and climate change, including extreme heat, sandstorms, and wildfires.

Background: Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) is a rare genetic disease of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) metabolism. Despite the devastating effect of this disease on atherosclerotic cardiovascular health, the disease phenotype and severity are more heterogeneous than previously thought. The predictors of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in HoFH patients have never been systematically studied.

Purpose: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic disorder associated with extremely high levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and increased incidence of cardiovascular disease. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and long-term outcomes of lipoprotein apheresis (LA) in the treatment of FH.
Methods: Cardiovascular events that occurred before and after LA treatment were evaluated by reviewing previous medical records of patients with FH.

Background: We report the case of a 63-year-old white Caucasian male patient admitted to the clinic because of atypical angina and palpitations. Other comorbidities included hypertension, hyperuricaemia, and hypercholesterolaemia. He was admitted to a tertiary cardiac centre for deepened diagnostics of his complaints.
