A series of tripodal (three-arm) lysine-based peptides were designed and synthesized and their self-assembly properties in aqueous solution and antimicrobial activity were investigated. We compare the behaviors of homochiral tripodal peptides (KKY)K and a homologue containing the bulky aromatic fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc) group Fmoc-(KKY)K, and heterochiral analogues containing k (d-Lys), (kkY)K and Fmoc-(kkY)K. The molecular conformation and self-assembly in aqueous solutions were probed using various spectroscopic techniques, along with small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM).

Unveiling the Racemization in Ferroelectrics with Coupled Ferroelectricity and Optical Activity.

J Phys Chem Lett

January 2025

Jiangsu Key Laboratory for Science and Applications of Molecular Ferroelectrics and School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing 211189, China.

The most distinctive features of ferroelectrics are spontaneous polarization and depolarization. Ferroelectricity was first observed in Rochelle salt, a compound with a chiral component in which the molecular chirality is not affected by depolarization. For structurally chiral ferroelectrics (SCFs), such as triglycine sulfate, which lacks chiral components, the depolarization effect on chirality presents an intriguing and unexplored topic.

Chiral allyl amines are important structural components in natural products, pharmaceuticals, and chiral catalysts. Herein, we report a cobalt-catalyzed enantioselective reductive coupling of imines with internal alkynes to synthesize chiral allyl amines. The reaction is catalyzed by a cobalt complex derived from commercially available bisphosphine ligand utilizing zinc as the electron donor.

Background: Indoxacarb, a type of chiral pesticide, is used to control Lepidoptera insects. Most studies had focused on the environmental behavior and selective toxicity of indoxacarb enantiomers, and the mechanism behind its selective biological activity against target organisms is not well understood.

Results: Spodoptera frugiperda was selected as the target insect.

Probing the Self-Assembly dynamics of cellulose nanocrystals by X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy.

J Colloid Interface Sci

December 2024

Wallenberg Wood Science Center, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, SE-100 44 Stockholm, Sweden; Department of Fibre and Polymer Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, SE-100 44 Stockholm, Sweden. Electronic address:

Hypothesis: Charge-stabilized colloidal cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) can self-assemble into higher-ordered chiral nematic structures by varying the volume fraction. The assembly process exhibits distinct dynamics during the isotropic to liquid crystal phase transition, which can be elucidated using X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS).

Experiments: Anionic CNCs were dispersed in propylene glycol (PG) and water spanning a range of volume fractions, encompassing several phase transitions.
