Raman and Photoluminescence Studies of Quasiparticles in van der Waals Materials.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials have received much attention due to the unique properties stemming from their van der Waals (vdW) interactions, quantum confinement, and many-body interactions of quasi-particles, which drive their exotic optical and electronic properties, making them critical in many applications. Here, we review our past years' findings, focusing on many-body interactions in 2D layered materials, including phonon anharmonicity, electron-phonon coupling (), exciton dynamics, and phonon anisotropy based on temperature (polarization)-dependent Raman spectroscopy and Photoluminescence (PL). Our review sheds light on the role of quasi-particles in tuning the material properties, which could help optimize 2D materials for future applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Terahertz Nanoscopy on Low-Dimensional Materials: Toward Ultrafast Physical Phenomena.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Terahertz Research Center, School of Electronic Science and Engineering, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Chengdu 611731, China.

Low-dimensional materials (LDMs) with unique electromagnetic properties and diverse local phenomena have garnered significant interest, particularly for their low-energy responses within the terahertz (THz) range. Achieving deep subwavelength resolution, THz nanoscopy offers a promising route to investigate LDMs at the nanoscale. Steady-state THz nanoscopy has been demonstrated as a powerful tool for investigating light-matter interactions across boundaries and interfaces, enabling insights into physical phenomena such as localized collective oscillations, quantum confinement of quasiparticles, and metal-to-insulator phase transitions (MITs).

Room-Temperature Magnetic Antiskyrmions in Canted Ferrimagnetic CoHo Alloy Films.

Adv Mater

January 2025

School of Materials Science and Engineering, Key Laboratory of Advanced Materials and Devices for Post-Moore Chips, Ministry of Education, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Beijing, 100083, China.

Magnetic antiskyrmions, the anti-quasiparticles of magnetic skyrmions, possess alternating Bloch- and Néel-type spin spirals, rendering them promising for advanced spintronics-based information storage. To date, antiskyrmions are demonstrated in a few bulk materials featuring anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions and a limited number of artificial multilayers. Identifying novel film materials capable of hosting isolated antiskyrmions is critical for memory applications in topological spintronics.

Particle exchange statistics beyond fermions and bosons.

Nature

January 2025

Department of Physics and Astronomy, Rice University, Houston, TX, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • There are generally two known types of particle statistics in quantum mechanics: fermions and bosons, along with a rare exception called anyons in two dimensions.
  • The concept of parastatistics, previously thought to be equivalent to fermions and bosons, is now shown to allow for unique particle types that follow distinct exclusion principles.
  • This research introduces a new theory involving these "paraparticles," leading to the discovery of new quasiparticle behaviors in quantum spin models, potentially paving the way for new elementary particle categories in physics.

Probing Berry Phase Effect in Topological Surface States.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of High Field Laser Physics and CAS Center for Excellence in Ultra-intense Laser Science, Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai, 201800, China.

We have observed the Berry phase effect associated with interband coherence in topological surface states (TSSs) using two-color high-harmonic spectroscopy. This Berry phase accumulates along the evolution path of strong field-driven electron-hole quasiparticles in electronic bands with strong spin-orbit coupling. By introducing a secondary weak field, we perturb the evolution of Dirac fermions in TSSs and thus provide access to the Berry phase.
