The tumor microenvironment characterized by heterogeneously organized vasculatures causes intra-tumoral heterogeneity of oxygen partial pressure at the cellular level, which cannot be measured by current imaging techniques. The intra-tumoral cellular heterogeneity may lead to a reduction of therapeutic effects of radiation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the heterogeneity on biological effectiveness of H-, He-, C-, O-, and Ne-ion beams for different oxygenation levels, prescribed dose levels, and cell types.

Shock waves, the interface of supersonic and subsonic plasma flows, are the primary region for charged particle acceleration in multiple space plasma systems, including Earth's bow shock, which is readily accessible for in-situ measurements. Spacecraft frequently observe relativistic electron populations within this region, characterized by energy levels surpassing those of solar wind electrons by a factor of 10,000 or more. However, mechanisms of such strong acceleration remain elusive.

Background/aim: For patients with unresectable locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC), carbon-ion radiotherapy (C-ion RT) can safely deliver higher doses than conventional photon therapy, increasing the potential for long-term survival. However, achieving meaningful improvements in survival rates requires reliable prognostic biomarkers to identify patients likely to benefit from treatment.
Patients And Methods: In this study, we measured plasma levels of soluble interleukin-6 receptor (sIL-6R) before C-ion RT and examined their association with the risk of distant metastasis (DM), local recurrence (LR), and overall survival (OS).

Radioresistant tumours remain complex to manage with current radiotherapy (RT) techniques. Heavy ion beams were proposed for their treatment given their advantageous radiobiological properties. However, previous studies with patients resulted in serious adverse effects in the surrounding healthy tissues.
