Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)-containing firefighting foam have been used in stationary fire suppression systems for several decades. However, there is a lack of research on how to decontaminate PFAS-contaminated infrastructure and evaluate treatment efficiency. This study assessed the removal of PFAS from stainless steel pipe surfaces using different cleaning agents (tap water, methanol, and aqueous solutions containing 10 and 20 wt % of butyl carbitol (BC)) at different temperatures (20 °C, 40 °C, and 70 °C).

Optical Tweezer Arrays of Erbium Atoms.

Phys Rev Lett

November 2024

Institut für Quantenoptik und Quanteninformation, Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Technikerstraße 21a, 6020 Innsbruck, Austria.

We present the first successful trapping of single erbium atoms in an array of optical tweezers. Using a single narrow-line optical transition, we achieve deep cooling for direct tweezer loading, pairwise ejection, and continuous imaging without additional recoil suppression techniques. Our tweezer wavelength choice enables us to reach the magic trapping condition by tuning the ellipticity of the trapping light.

This paper presents a novel reaction microscope designed for ion-atom collision investigations, established at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lanzhou, China. Its time-of-flight (TOF) spectrometer employs an innovative flight-time focusing method consisting of two acceleration regions, providing optimal time focusing conditions for charged fragments with diverse initial velocities. The TOF spectrometer's axis intentionally tilts by 12° relative to the ion beam direction, preventing potential obstructions from the TOF grid electrodes.

Endovascular strategies play a vital role in the treatment of peripheral arterial disease (PAD). However, luminal loss or restenosis after endovascular intervention remains a significant challenge. The main underlying mechanisms are negative vascular remodeling and elastic recoil in balloon angioplasty.

Mechanisms of ultrafast GHz burst fs laser ablation.

Sci Adv

March 2023

Laser Technologies Group, Energy Technologies Area, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, CA 94720, USA.

Gigahertz (GHz) femtosecond (fs) lasers have opened possibilities for enhancing and controlling the laser machining quality to engineer the physicochemical properties of materials. However, fundamental understanding of laser-material interactions by GHz fs laser has remained unsolved due to the complexity of associated ablation dynamics. Here, we study the ablation dynamics of copper (Cu) by GHz fs bursts using in situ multimodal diagnostics, time-resolved scattering imaging, emission imaging, and emission spectroscopy.
