Larvae from the petroleum oil fly, Helaeomyia petrolei, live in the asphaltene and polyaromatic hydrocarbon rich asphalt seeps of Rancho La Brea, Los Angeles, California. These larvae pass high amounts of viscous asphalt through their digestive system, and their gut microbiota is exposed to these extreme conditions. Environmental stress response mechanisms can co-select for antibiotic resistance, and in the current study we used 16S rRNA and genomic sequencing along with the Comprehensive Antibiotic Resistance Database (CARD) tools to characterize antibiotic resistance profiles from six bacteria previously isolated from the oil fly larval intestinal tract, linking phenotypic and genotypic resistance profiles.

Distinguishing functions of trypanosomatid protein kinases.

Trends Parasitol

November 2022

York Biomedical Research Institute, Department of Biology, University of York, York, UK. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Trypanosomatid protozoa are unique parasites that have developed special ways to manage their life cycles and adapt to various hosts, differing from typical models.
  • Understanding their adaptation strategies could lead to better drug control methods.
  • The review emphasizes the role of protein kinases in these organisms, comparing the distinct features of trypanosomatid kinomes with other eukaryotes and focusing on Leishmania and African trypanosomes.

How colonial animals evolve.

Sci Adv

January 2020

Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Apartado Postal 0843-03092, Panamá, República de Panamá.

The evolution of modular colonial animals such as reef corals and bryozoans is enigmatic because of the ability for modules to proliferate asexually as whole colonies reproduce sexually. This reproductive duality creates an evolutionary tension between modules and colonies because selection operates at both levels. To understand how this evolutionary conflict is resolved, we compared the evolutionary potential of module- and colony-level traits in two species of the bryozoan , grown and bred in a common garden experiment.

Drastic changes in hormone titers, in particular of steroid hormones, are intuitively interpreted as necessary and beneficial for optimal functioning of animals. Peaks in progesterone- and estradiol titers that accompany the estrus cycle in female vertebrates as well as in ecdysteroids at each molt and during metamorphosis of holometabolous insects are prominent examples. A recent analysis of insect metamorphosis yielded the view that, in general, a sharp rise in sex steroid hormone titer signals that somewhere in the body some tissue(s) is undergoing programmed cell death/apoptosis.
