Grating-assisted, contra-directional couplers (GA-CDCs), owing to their four-port operations, can offer several important advantages over traditional, single waveguide-based Bragg gratings. However, how to flexibly design the spectral responses of GA-CDCs has been much less studied. We report the spectral tailoring methodology of GA-CDCs to achieve arbitrary, physically realizable, complex spectral responses.

The giant honeybee Apis dorsata (Fabricius, 1793) is an evolutionarily ancient species that builds its nests in the open. The nest consists of a single honeycomb covered with the bee curtain which are several layers of worker bees that remain almost motionless with their heads up and abdomens down on the nest surface, except for the mouth area, the hub between inner- and outer-nest activities. A colony may change this semi-quiescence several times a day, depending on its reproductive state and ambient temperature, to enter the state of mass flight activity (MFA), in which nest organisation is restructured and defense ability is likely to be suppressed (predicted by the mass-flight-suspend-defensiveness hypothesis).

Design of filtering cable with defected conductor layer.

Sci Rep

March 2024

Department of the College of Information Science and Technology, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing, 100029, China.

Electrical cables, often referred to as 'blood vessels' and 'nerves' of the industry, play a vital role in the connection of electrical devices. However, traditional cables that lack distributed filtering functions are usually the primary coupling path for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) problems. An innovative design for a filtering cable, which incorporates insulated electrical wires coated with a specific defected conductor layer (DCL), enables it to achieve distributed filtering advantages along its axis.

Surge of power transmission in flat and nearly flat band lattices.

Phys Rev E

November 2023

Department of Mathematics, Khalifa University of Science and Technology, P.O. Box 127788, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Flat band systems can yield interesting phenomena, such as dispersion suppression of waves with frequency at the band. While linear transport vanishes, the corresponding nonlinear case is still an open question. Here, we study power transmission along nonlinear sawtooth lattices due to waves with the flat band frequency injected at one end.

Inertial active ratchet: Simulation versus theory.

Phys Rev E

May 2023

Department of Physics, University of Kerala, Kariavattom, Thiruvananthapuram-695581, India.

We present the inertial active dynamics of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle in a piecewise sawtooth ratchet potential. Using the Langevin simulation and matrix continued fraction method (MCFM), the particle transport, steady-state diffusion, and coherence in transport are investigated in different parameter regimes of the model. Spatial asymmetry is found to be a key criterion for the possibility of directed transport in the ratchet.
