Double-blind randomised trial of saline solution for gargling and nasal rinsing in SARS-CoV-2 infection.

J Glob Health

December 2024

Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine, UTHealth, Houston, Texas, USA.

Background: Previous studies have shown that hypertonic saline nasal irrigation and gargling reduced the duration of symptoms in upper respiratory infections caused by coronavirus. This study aims to investigate the effects of two saline regimens on symptoms associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Methods: Between 2020 and 2022, individuals aged 18-65 years who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were randomly assigned to either low- or high-saline regimens for 14 days.

The stomatal phenotype is a crucial microscopic characteristic of the leaf surface, and modulating the stomata of maize leaves can enhance photosynthetic carbon assimilation and water use efficiency, thereby playing a vital role in maize yield formation. The evolving imaging and image processing technologies offer effective tools for precise analysis of stomatal phenotypes. This study employed Jingnongke 728 and its parental inbred to capture stomatal images from various leaf positions and abaxial surfaces during key reproductive stages using rapid scanning electron microscopy.

Anterior cervical fixation is an excellent surgical technique for the removal of anterior compressive elements affecting the spinal cord and nerve roots while addressing cervical instability. However, it is important to recognize the unique challenges posed by the proximity of critical structures, including the trachea, esophagus, carotid sheath, and recurrent laryngeal nerve. Access to the upper cervical spine is often limited to the mandible.

Background And Objectives: Accurate intraoperative assessment of coronal alignment is critical to achieving favorable clinical outcomes in adult spinal deformity surgery. However, surgical positioning creates challenges in predicting standing coronal alignment. Gravity-based plumblines require an upright posture and are not possible intraoperatively.

Ambient temperature leads to differential immune strategies in the subterranean rodent Ctenomys talarum.

J Exp Biol

January 2025

Grupo de Ecología Fisiológica y del Comportamiento. Instituto de Investigaciones Marinas y Costeras (IIMyC). CONICET - Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata, Argentina.

Animal thermoregulation may have significant costs and compete directly or indirectly with other energetically demanding processes, such as immune function. Although the subterranean environment is characterized by thermally-stable conditions, small changes in ambient temperature could be critical in shaping immunity. However, little is known about the effects of ambient temperature, in naturally varying ranges, on immunity of wild species.
