Excess death estimates compared with state-reported and observed COVID-19 deaths, New Jersey and the United States, 2020-2022.

Front Public Health

September 2024

Communicable Disease Service, Infectious and Zoonotic Disease Program, Division of Epidemiology, Environmental, and Occupational Health, New Jersey Department of Health, Trenton, NJ, United States.

Article Synopsis
  • The number of COVID-19-related deaths in the U.S. is estimated at over 1.2 million, but the actual count may vary due to different reporting methods and potential inaccuracies.
  • In New Jersey, the Department of Health reported 35,555 COVID-19-associated deaths, slightly surpassing the National Center for Health Statistics' excess death estimate of 30,365 for the same time frame (2020-2022).
  • Comparatively, the total observed COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. during this period (1,094,230) did not fully match the national excess death estimate of 1,233,366, indicating discrepancies in reporting across different states.

Temperature upper bound of an ideal gas.

Heliyon

July 2024

School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Korea National University of Transportation, Chungju 380-702, Korea.

We study thermodynamics of a heat-conducting ideal gas system. The study is based on i) the first law of thermodynamics from action formulation which expects heat-dependence of energy density and ii) the existence condition of a (local) Lorentz boost between an Eckart observer and a Landau-Lifshitz observer-a condition that extends the stability criterion of thermal equilibrium. The implications of these conditions include: i) Heat contributes to the energy density through the combination where , , and Θ represent heat, the number density, and the temperature, respectively.

Background: Distal Xq28 duplication, or int22h1/int22h2-mediated Xq28 duplication syndrome, leads to cognitive impairment, neurobehavioral issues, and facial dysmorphisms. Existing literature has limited information on clinical traits and penetrance.

Methods: We identified cases of distal Xq28 duplication (chrX: 154,126,575-154,709,680, GRCh37/hg19) through a review of clinical records and microarray reports from five centers, encompassing both postnatal and prenatal cases, with no prior family knowledge of the duplication.

Field-Induced Non-BEC Transitions in Frustrated Magnets.

Phys Rev Lett

February 2024

Department of Physics and Astronomy, Rice University, Houston, Texas 77005, USA.

Frustrated spin systems have traditionally proven challenging to understand, owing to a scarcity of controlled methods for their analyses. By contrast, under strong magnetic fields, certain aspects of spin systems admit simpler and universal description in terms of hardcore bosons. The bosonic formalism is anchored by the phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), which has helped explain the behaviors of a wide range of magnetic compounds under applied magnetic fields.

A unique functionality was reported for a thin-film soft magnetic strip with a certain angle of inclined magnetic anisotropy. It can switch magnetic domain by applying a surface normal field with a certain distribution on the element. The domain switches between a single domain and a multi-domain.
