The ultrastructural localization of 3 beta hydroxysteroid ferricyanide reductase, glucose-6-phosphate ferricyanide reductase and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and reduced form-ferricyanide reductase was investigated in some human steroidogenic tissues (corpus luteum of pregnancy, fetal adrenal gland and testis, adult testis and placenta) using ferricyanide as an electron acceptor. Copper ferrocyanide deposits were readily observed in the mitochondria, in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum profiles and in the cytoplasm. The sites of the various dehydrogenase activities could be visualized by using appropriate incubating media. The precise localization of various reactions in different electron transfer chains was determined by using different ferricyanide concentrations and intermediate electron-carriers such as menadione or exogenous nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and reduced form-diaphorase. The use of respiratory chain inhibitors such as rotenone or antimycine A confirmed these data.

Electrodes functionalised with weak electroactive microorganisms offer a viable alternative to conventional chemical sensors for detecting priority pollutants in bioremediation processes. Biofilm-based biosensors have been proposed for this purpose. However, biofilm formation and maturation require 24-48 h, and the microstructure and coverage of the electrode surface cannot be controlled, leading to poorly reproducible signal and sensitivity.

Biophotovoltaics (BPV) represents an innovative biohybrid technology that couples electrochemistry with oxygenic photosynthetic microbes to harness solar energy and convert it into electricity. Central to BPV systems is the ability of microbes to perform extracellular electron transfer (EET), utilizing an anode as an external electron sink. This process simultaneously serves as an electron sink and enhances the efficiency of water photolysis compared to conventional electrochemical water splitting.

8-Oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine (dOG), the dominant oxidative product of 2'-deoxyguanosine (dG) under high levels of reactive oxygen species, usually serves as a biomarker for oxidative stress and a risk assessment factor for various diseases. Due to the extremely low abundance of dOG and the susceptibility of dOG detection to the interference of spurious oxidation, research on related biological processes is limited by insufficient sensitivity and specificity. In this work, an ultrasensitive and reliable approach for genome-wide dOG quantification was developed through chemical labeling-assisted high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry with the introduction of glycosylase pretreatment.

New insights on the self-assembling process of diphenylalanine (FF) into nanostructures in view of its application as an alternative nanomaterial for bioanalytical and biomedical systems are presented in the frame of the present work. Experimental conditions, such as peptide concentration and solubilization medium pH, were explored to understand the hierarchical process involved in the formation of self-assembled nanostructures arising from the simple and short diphenylalanine peptide. Optical microscopic and TEM images supported by DLS data authenticated the hierarchical self-assembly outcoming from the original nature of the first nanostructures, showing individual nanotubes and vesicles stacking to grow well-defined microtubes.

Exploring nonequilibrium hot carriers from plasmonic metal nanostructures is a dynamic field in optoelectronics, with applications including photochemical reactions for solar fuel generation. The hot carrier injection mechanism and the reaction rate are highly impacted by the metal/molecule interaction. However, determining the primary type of reaction and thus the injection mechanism of hot carriers has remained elusive.
