Bridged emulsion gels from polymer-nanoparticle enabling large-amount biomedical encapsulation and functionalization.

Nat Commun

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Materials Chemistry for Energy Conversion and Storage of Ministry of Education (HUST), School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), Wuhan, 430074, China.

Large-amount encapsulation and subsequent expressing are common characteristics for many biomedical applications, such as cosmetic creams and medical ointments. Emulsion gels can accomplish that, but often undergo exclusive, complex, multiple synthesis steps, showing extremely laborious and non-universal. The method here is simple via precisely interfacial engineering in homogenizing a nanoparticle aqueous dispersion and a polymer oil solution, gaining interfacial 45° three-phase-contact-angle for the nanoparticle that can bridge across oil emulsions' interfaces and ultimately form interconnected macroscopic networks.

We present a systematic experimental dataset on the temperature dependence of specific heat capacity in a binary mixture of the second and seventh homologous series of 5-alkyloxy-2-(4-nonyloxy-phenyl) pyrimidine (PhP) liquid crystal compound. These binary mixtures exhibit nematic, smectic-A, and smectic-C phases within a concentration range of= 0-0.45.

We analyze in depth the Elastically Collective Nonlinear Langevin Equation theory of activated dynamics in metastable liquids to establish that the predicted inter-relationships between the alpha relaxation time, local cage and collective elastic barriers, dynamic localization length, and shear modulus are causally related within the theory to the medium range order (MRO) static correlation length. The latter grows exponentially with density for metastable hard sphere fluids and as a nonuniversal inverse power law with temperature for supercooled liquids under isobaric conditions. The physical origin of predicted connections between the alpha time and other metrics of cage order and the thermodynamic inverse dimensionless compressibility is fully established.

Trends, prescribing patterns, and determinants of initial antiepileptic drug treatment in older epileptic patients.

Int J Pharm Pract

November 2024

Division of Clinical Pharmacy, Department of Pharmaceutical Care, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Phayao, Phayao 56000, Thailand.

Objectives: There is no report on the initial antiepileptic drug (AED) treatment of older Thai epileptic patients. This study aimed to determine the trends, prescribing patterns, and determinants of initial AED treatment.

Methods: This cross-sectional study used data on older (≥60 years) epileptic patients gathered from one tertiary-care hospital's database from 2012 to 2022.

Universal superdiffusion of random walks in media with embedded fractal networks of low diffusivity.

Phys Rev E

August 2024

Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering and Saint Anthony Falls Laboratory, University of Minnesota, 500 Pillsbury Drive SE, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55455, USA.

Diffusion in composite media with high contrasts between diffusion coefficients in fractal sets of inclusions and in their embedding matrices is modeled by lattice random walks (RWs) with probabilities p<1 of hops from fractal sites and 1 from matrix sites. Superdiffusion is predicted in time intervals that depend on p and with diffusion exponents that depend on the dimensions of matrix (E) and fractal (D_{F}) as ν=1/(2+D_{F}-E). This contrasts with the nonuniversal subdiffusion of RWs confined to fractal media.
