We propose a new approach to search for light dark matter (DM), with keV-GeV mass, via inelastic nucleus scattering at large-volume neutrino detectors such as Borexino, DUNE, Super-K, Hyper-K, and JUNO. The approach uses inelastic nuclear scattering of cosmic-ray boosted DM, enabling a low-background search for DM in these experiments. Large neutrino detectors, with higher thresholds than dark matter detectors, can be used, since the nuclear deexcitation lines are O(10)  MeV.

Post-failure deformation mode switching in volcanic rock.

R Soc Open Sci

August 2024

Université de Strasbourg, CNRS, Institut Terre et Environnement de Strasbourg, UMR 7063, 5 rue Descartes, Strasbourg F-67084, France.

Beyond a threshold applied compressive stress, porous rocks typically undergo either dilatant or compactant inelastic deformation and the response of their physical properties to deformation mode is key to mass transport, heat transport and pressure evolution in crustal systems. Transitions in failure modes-involving switches between dilatancy and compaction-have also been observed, but to date have received little attention. Here, we perform a series of targeted mechanical deformation experiments on porous andesites, designed to elucidate complex post-failure deformation behaviour.

Linear carbon series cyanopolyacetylenes (HCN) ( = 3, 4, and 5) are astromolecules found in the atmosphere of Titan and interstellar media such as TMC-1 (Taurus molecular cloud-1). All these compounds are also detected in IRC + 10 216. In the present work, we comprehensively investigate electron interaction with important cyanopolyacetylene compounds, HCN (cyano-tri-acetylene), HCN (cyano-tetra-acetylene), and HCN (cyano-penta-acetylene).

Elastic and Electronically Inelastic Cross Sections for the Scattering of Electrons by Pyrrole.

J Phys Chem A

July 2024

Departamento de Física, Universidade Federal do Paraná, Caixa Postal 19044, 81531-980 Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil.

Integral and differential cross sections for elastic and electronically inelastic electron scattering from the pyrrole molecule are reported. The cross section calculations employed the Schwinger multichannel method with norm-conserving pseudopotentials. The collision dynamics was described according to a model in which up to 209 energetically accessible channels were treated as open.

Elastomers are made of chain-like molecules to form networks that can sustain large deformation. Rubbers are thermosetting elastomers that are obtained from irreversible curing reactions. Curing reactions create permanent bonds between the molecular chains.
