The natural Z-scheme of oxygenic photosynthesis efficiently drives electron transfer from photosystem II (PSII) to photosystem I (PSI) via an electron transport chain, despite the lower energy levels of PSII. Inspired by this sophisticated mechanism, we present a layered cascade bio-solar cell (CBSC) that emulates the Z-scheme. In this design, chlorophyll derivatives (Chl) act as PSI analogs, while bacteriochlorophyll derivatives (BChl) serve as PSII analogs in the active layer.

Dynamic X-ray Microtomography vs. Laser-Doppler Vibrometry: A Comparative Study.

J Assoc Res Otolaryngol

January 2025

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, University of Bern, 3010, Freiburgstrasse, Bern, Switzerland.

Purpose: There are challenges in understanding the biomechanics of the human middle ear, and established methods for studying this system show significant limitations. In this study, we evaluate a novel dynamic imaging technique based on synchrotron X-ray microtomography designed to assess the biomechanical properties of the human middle ear by comparing it to laser-Doppler vibrometry (LDV).

Methods: We examined three fresh-frozen temporal bones (TB), two donated by white males and one by a Black female, using dynamic synchrotron-based X-ray microtomography for 256 and 512 Hz, stimulated at 110 dB and 120 dB sound pressure level (SPL).

Menstrual cycle effects on thermoregulation while exercising in the heat.

J Therm Biol

January 2025

School of Integrative Physiology and Athletic Training, University of Montana, 32 Campus Drive, Missoula, MT, 59812, USA. Electronic address:

Women may be challenged to maintain thermoregulation due to hormonal changes associated with the menstrual cycle. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of the menstrual cycle phase on core temperature, hydration status, and perceived exertion while exercising under uncompensable heat gain. Eleven eumenorrheic women (24.

Background: PSI-90, a composite measure comprising ten indicators, reflects the quality of care during hospital stays. The Hospital-Acquired Condition Reduction Program (HACRP), a Centers for Medicare and Medical Services (CMS) program, assesses hospital performance based on quality measures, including PSI-90, with financial implications for poor performers.

Objectives: To evaluate PSI events, establish workflows for accurate documentation, and foster collaboration across clinical and administrative teams, with the ultimate objective of reducing PSI events.

Flow electrolytic separation of radionuclides for interference suppression in γ-spectrometry.

Anal Chim Acta

February 2025

Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences, Laboratory of Inorganic Chemistry, ETH Zürich, Vladimir-Prelog-Weg 1-5/10, Zürich, CH-8093, Switzerland; Laboratory of Radiochemistry, Centre for Nuclear Engineering and Sciences, Paul Scherrer Institute, Forschungsstrasse 111, Villigen PSI, CH-5232, Switzerland. Electronic address:

Background: The direct and accurate measurement of low-level γ-emitters in samples from nuclear facilities is a challenging task due to the presence of high activities of dominant radionuclides. In this case a complex chemical separation is required to remove interfering radionuclides prior to γ-spectrometric analysis. Several radionuclides such as, Ag, Sb, Sn and Te are of relevance for radioanalytical analysis in nuclear facilities.
