Proton-Proton Fusion and Tritium β Decay from Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics.

Phys Rev Lett

August 2017

Jefferson Laboratory, 12000 Jefferson Avenue, Newport News, Virginia 23606, USA.

The nuclear matrix element determining the pp→de^{+}ν fusion cross section and the Gamow-Teller matrix element contributing to tritium β decay are calculated with lattice quantum chromodynamics for the first time. Using a new implementation of the background field method, these quantities are calculated at the SU(3) flavor-symmetric value of the quark masses, corresponding to a pion mass of m_{π}∼806  MeV. The Gamow-Teller matrix element in tritium is found to be 0.

Gravitational Two-Loop Counterterm Is Asymptotically Safe.

Phys Rev Lett

May 2016

Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics and Particle Physics (IMAPP), Radboud University Nijmegen, Heyendaalseweg 135, 6525 AJ Nijmegen, Netherlands.

Weinberg's asymptotic safety scenario provides an elegant mechanism to construct a quantum theory of gravity within the framework of quantum field theory based on a non-Gaussian fixed point of the renormalization group flow. In this work we report novel evidence for the validity of this scenario, using functional renormalization group techniques to determine the renormalization group flow of the Einstein-Hilbert action supplemented by the two-loop counterterm found by Goroff and Sagnotti. The resulting system of beta functions comprises three scale-dependent coupling constants and exhibits a non-Gaussian fixed point which constitutes the natural extension of the one found at the level of the Einstein-Hilbert action.

Evanescent operators such as the Gauss-Bonnet term have vanishing perturbative matrix elements in exactly D=4 dimensions. Similarly, evanescent fields do not propagate in D=4; a three-form field is in this class, since it is dual to a cosmological-constant contribution. In this Letter, we show that evanescent operators and fields modify the leading ultraviolet divergence in pure gravity.

Gravity dual of supersymmetric gauge theories on a squashed five-sphere.

Phys Rev Lett

October 2014

Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford, Woodstock Road, Oxford OX2 6GG, United Kingdom.

We present the gravity dual of large N supersymmetric gauge theories on a squashed five-sphere. The one-parameter family of solutions is constructed in Euclidean Romans F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions, and uplifts to massive type IIA supergravity. By renormalizing the theory with appropriate counterterms we evaluate the renormalized on-shell action for the solutions.

Revising the predictions of inflation for the cosmic microwave background anisotropies.

Phys Rev Lett

August 2009

Departamento de Física Teórica and IFIC, Centro Mixto Universidad de Valencia-CSIC, Facultad de Física, Universidad de Valencia, Burjassot-46100, Valencia, Spain.

We point out that, if quantum field renormalization is taken into account and the counterterms are evaluated at the Hubble-radius crossing time or few e-foldings after it, the predictions of slow-roll inflation for both the scalar and the tensorial power spectrum change significantly. This leads to a change in the consistency condition that relates the tensor-to-scalar amplitude ratio with spectral indices. A reexamination of the potentials varphi;{2} and varphi;{4} shows that both are compatible with five-year WMAP data.
