Relativistic and electron-correlation effects in static dipole polarizabilities for group 12 elements.

Institute of Applied Analysis and Numerical Simulation, University of Stuttgart, Pfaffenwaldring 57, Stuttgart, 70569, Germany.

In this study, we report a comprehensive calculation of the static dipole polarizabilities of group 12 elements using the finite-field approach combined with the relativistic coupled-cluster method, including single, double, and perturbative triple excitations. Relativistic effects are systematically investigated, including scalar-relativistic, spin-orbit coupling (SOC), and fully relativistic Dirac-Coulomb contributions. The final recommended polarizability values are 37.

Shock waves, the interface of supersonic and subsonic plasma flows, are the primary region for charged particle acceleration in multiple space plasma systems, including Earth's bow shock, which is readily accessible for in-situ measurements. Spacecraft frequently observe relativistic electron populations within this region, characterized by energy levels surpassing those of solar wind electrons by a factor of 10,000 or more. However, mechanisms of such strong acceleration remain elusive.

In this work, the two-center Dirac equation is solved numerically using an extension of an adapted B-spline basis set method previously implemented in relativistic atomic calculations (Fischer, C. F.; Zatsarinny, O.

In this study, the two-dimensional (2D) triangular lattice metallic photonic crystals (PCs) in visible and infrared bands have been utilized to achieve light confinement at the Dirac frequency. Distinct from the traditional bandgap or total internal reflection cavity modes, the unique photonic localization mechanism leads to an unusual algebraic decay of state and a unique frequency located beyond any bandgaps. This investigation delves into the band structure analysis of 2D metallic PCs, specifically focusing on their distinctive features, such as photonic bandgaps and Dirac cones.

We show that it is possible to design corrugated waveguides where phase and group velocities coincide at an inflection point of the dispersion relation, thereby allowing an extended regime of interaction with a charge particle beam. This provides a basis for designing travelling slow-wave structures with a broadband interaction between relativistic charged particle beams and propagating terahertz waves allowing an energy exchange between beam and wave, amplifying terahertz radiation. We employ Fourier-Mathieu expansion, which gives approximate analytic solutions to Maxwell equations in a corrugated waveguide with periodically undulating cross-section.
