Altermagnetism: A Chemical Perspective.

J Am Chem Soc

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, University of California, Berkeley, California 97420, United States.

Altermagnets have been recently introduced as a classification of collinear, spin compensated magnetic materials that host net-zero magnetization yet display some electronic behaviors typically associated with noncompensated magnetic materials like ferromagnets. The emergence of such properties are a consequence of spin-split bands that arise under specific symmetry conditions in the limit of zero spin-orbit coupling. In this Perspective, we summarize the fundamental criteria for realizing an altermagnetic phase and present a qualitative electronic band structure derivation and symmetry analysis through chemical principles.

Background: South Asian (SA) older adults are one of the fastest growing US populations developing Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADRD). Compared to non-Hispanic white (NHW) Americans, SA are hesitant to enroll in neuropsychological and MRI research. This status complicates accurate assessment and diagnosis.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Department of Neurobiology and Behavior, University of California, Irvine, Irvine, CA, USA.

Background: In the context of pathological aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD), the overexpression of calcineurin has been identified as a factor linked to astrocyte reactivity, neuronal death, and inflammation. This suggests that inhibiting calcineurin or downstream nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT) signaling could be a promising strategy for preventing or slowing down AD pathophysiology.

Method: Baseline and annual MRI sessions including higher-order diffusion-weighted imaging was performed over four years on 43 dogs ranging from 5 to 8.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Imaging Laboratory (AIBIL), Center for and Data Science for Integrated Diagnostics (AI2D), Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA.

Background: Late-life obesity has been reported to have a negative relationship with risk for dementia and has been associated with lower risk of incident Alzheimer's disease (AD) in non-demented individuals. However, associations of obesity and cognition solely in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is unknown. These associations may be confounded by vascular risk that contributes to metabolic syndrome (MetS).

Background: A combination of impairments in odor threshold and discrimination, which are both predominantly sensory level functions, and olfactory cognition contribute to age-related odor-identification deficits. However, in Alzheimer's disease (AD), odor identification is more impaired compared to sensory-level olfactory functions. We, therefore, hypothesized that match and mismatch olfactory fMRI tasks could be used to isolate areas of odor-identification and that these areas would include primary as well as secondary olfactory structures.
