Induction of lysosome biogenesis is a novel function of the CGAS-STING1 pathway.

Autophagy

January 2025

Department of Thoracic Surgery of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, and Department of Biochemistry, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou, China.

Induction of macroautophagy/autophagy has been established as an important function elicited by the CGAS-STING1 pathway during pathogen infection. However, it remains unknown whether lysosomal activity within the cell in these settings is concurrently enhanced to cope with the increased autophagic flux. Recently, we discovered that the CGAS-STING1 pathway elevates the degradative capacity of the cell by activating lysosome biogenesis.

Background: Patients on maintenance hemodialysis (HD) face complications due to the accumulation of protein-bound uremic toxins, such as advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which contribute to inflammation, oxidative stress, and cardiovascular disease. Conventional HD techniques inadequately remove AGEs. This study evaluates the efficacy of the HA130 hemoadsorption cartridge combined with high-flux HD (HF-HD) in enhancing AGE removal.

Introduction: Cadmium (Cd) and polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs), two ubiquitous environmental contaminants, produce unique synergistic toxicity when co-existing. Key unanswered questions include specific effects on liver function and potential mechanisms.

Methods: In this study, C57BL/6 mice and AML12 cells were used to establish and models to elucidate the effects of combined exposure to PS-MPs and Cd on the liver and their mechanisms.

Heterologous Biosynthesis of Terpenoids in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Biotechnol J

January 2025

Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Soft Matter Science and Engineering, College of Life Science and Technology, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing, China.

Terpenoids are widely distributed in nature and have various applications in healthcare products, pharmaceuticals, and fragrances. Despite the significant potential that terpenoids possess, traditional production methods, such as plant extraction and chemical synthesis, face challenges in meeting current market demand. With the advancement of synthetic biology and metabolic engineering, it becomes feasible to construct efficient microbial cell factories for large-scale production of terpenoids.

Background: Bioengineering of human teeth for replacement is an appealing regenerative approach in the era of gene therapy. Developmentally regulated transcription factors hold promise in the quest because these transcriptional regulators constitute the gene regulatory networks driving cell fate determination. Atonal homolog 1 (Atoh1) is a transcription factor of the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) family essential for neurogenesis in the cerebellum, auditory hair cell differentiation, and intestinal stem cell specification.
