Solid-phase rare earth monoxides have been recently synthesized thin film epitaxy. However, it has been difficult to synthesize heavy rare earth monoxides owing to their severe chemical instability. In this study, rocksalt-type heavy rare earth monoxides REOs (RE = Tb, Dy, Er) were synthesized for the first time, as single-phase epitaxial thin films.

Chromium nitride (CrN) spurred enormous interest due to its coupled magnetostructural and unique metal-insulator transition. The underneath electronic structure of CrN remains elusive. Herein, the electronic structure of epitaxial CrN thin film has been explored by employing resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES) and X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy study in combination with the first-principles calculations.

ConspectusThe liquid-microjet technique combined with soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) has become an exceptionally powerful experimental tool to investigate the electronic structure of liquid water and nonaqueous solvents and solutes, including nanoparticle (NP) suspensions, since its first implementation at the BESSY II synchrotron radiation facility 20 years ago. This Account focuses on NPs dispersed in water, offering a unique opportunity to access the solid-electrolyte interface for identifying interfacial species by their characteristic photoelectron spectral fingerprints. Generally, the applicability of PES to a solid-water interface is hampered due to the small mean free path of the photoelectrons in solution.

The valence band photoemission (VB PE) spectra of the [Ni(Salen)] molecular complex were measured by ultraviolet, soft X-ray and resonant photoemission (ResPE) using photons with energies ranging from 21.2 eV to 860 eV. It was found that the Ni 3d atomic orbitals' (AOs) contributions are most significant for molecular orbitals (MOs), which are responsible for the low-energy PE band at a binding energy of 3.

Oxygen-vacancy-induced topotactic phase transformation between the ABObrownmillerite structure and the ABOperovskite structure attracts ever-increasing attention due to the perspective applications in catalysis, clean energy field, and memristors. However, a detailed investigation of the electronic-structure evolution during the topotactic phase transformation for understanding the underlying mechanism is highly desired. In this work, multiple analytical methods were used to explore evolution of the electronic structure of SrFeOthin films during the topotactic phase transformation.
