Background: The passive fit of 3-unit implant supported prefabricated metal screw-retained prosthesis before implant placement might be difficult. Hence, we aim to evaluate the passive fit and time efficiency of CAD/CAM 3-unit implant supported fixed prostheses that were constructed based on virtual versus those based on actual implant positions in Kennedy Class I models.

Methods: A sample of 5 Kennedy class I models with thin wiry ridges were restored by 20 frameworks bilaterally, 10 based on actual (group A) and 10 based on virtual (group V) implant positions.

Purpose: This pilot clinical trial aimed to investigate accuracy of intra-oral scanning (IOS) with and without artificial reference markers in capturing total, subtotal and congenital nasal defects.

Basic Procedures: Thirteen patients with 3 types of nasal defects were selected and digitally scanned using an IOS with (ScM) and without artificial markers (Sc). Patients were grouped as follows; Group T (total nasal defect), Group P (partial/subtotal nasal defect), Group C (congenital defect).

Article Synopsis
  • - A 10-month-old boy with a frontonasal encephalocele was found to have a mother with a nasal dermal sinus, marking a rare case of these two central nervous system malformations occurring in a parent-child relationship.
  • - This is significant because similar cases have not been documented before, suggesting a possible hereditary connection between these types of malformations.
  • - The case highlights the need for further research into the genetic factors behind these defects, which could help in predicting their occurrence within families in the future.

Pregnant women are still considered as drug orphans. Developing new medications for pregnancy complications is an urgent need. Nanomedicines seem to be a promising approach to control the biodistribution of drugs to ensure both the mother's and the fetus' safety.

Background: Oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) are primarily responsible for the development of male infertility after exposure to γ-irradiation. The present work aimed to assess the ameliorative and therapeutic roles of the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of the edible seaweed () on spermatogenesis and infertility in γ-irradiated Wistar rats.

Materials And Methods: Induction of infertility was performed by exposing the rats to Cs-gamma rays, using a single dose of 3.

Objective: To identify risk factors and interventions affecting length of hospitalization (LOH) and clinical outcome in children with intracranial complications of rhinosinusitis.

Methods: Retrospective chart review of 12 children hospitalized at 2 academic medical centers for intracranial complications of rhinosinusitis over the past 5 years.

Results: 12 patients were identified with an average age at presentation of 13 years old.

The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate implant survival in irradiated nasal, auricular, orbital sites and to compare them with non-irradiated respective sites. Four electronic databases and seven related journals were searched until December and March 2018, respectively. A total of 7892 articles were identified, 18 of which were included in this review; one non-randomized clinical trial, two prospective cohort, eight retrospective cohort and seven cross-sectional studies.

Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 4 infection is most commonly reported in sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East; however, prevalence is increasing worldwide through immigration. HCV genotype 4 accounts for 20% of all infections, but clinical trial data for treatment remain limited. We assessed the combination of two direct-acting antivirals, ombitasvir (NS5A inhibitor) and paritaprevir (NS3/4A protease inhibitor; co-dosed with ritonavir) plus ribavirin in patients with HCV genotype 4 infection and compensated cirrhosis.

Treatment of patients with chronic hepatitis C with the current standard pegylated interferon (PEG-IFN) and ribavirin achieves overall response (SVR) rates of ~55%. A role of CD4+ CD25+ regulatory T cells (Treg cells) has been proposed as they can suppress HCV-specific T cells in HCV-infected patients. Patients with chronic HCV legible for PEG-IFN plus ribavirin treatment, were classified according to their response to treatment into two groups (responders and non-responders, 32 and 27 patients respectively).

Background: Endoscopic procedure has been known as the method of choice for treatment of hydrocephalus with 8.5% complication rate. It seems that good dural closure, reconstructing bone defect and perfect pericranium suturing can decrease the wound complications.

Re-synostosis after standard surgical procedures for nonsyndromic craniosynostosis is a rare event, which can occur at the same suture or rarely in adjacent sutures. Here, we report 2 patients with primary metopic craniosynostosis who developed bicoronal synostosis in previously opened sutures several months after surgery.

Objective: Myelomeningocele may be isolated but more frequently is associated with other anomalies. Congenital heart disease occurs with different incidence rate in myelomeningocele which is observed more frequently with skeletal malformations.

Methods: This study was undertaken in the Children's Hospital Medical Center between 2010 to 2012 to evaluate 75 myelomeningocele patients for cardiac anomalies, with electrocardiography and echocardiography in addition to clinical examination of the cardiopulmonary system.

Lipomyelomeningocele, a congenital spine defect, is presented as skin-covered lipomatous tissue that attaches to the cord in different ways according to its subtypes. Unlike other types of neural tube defects, the exact cause of this birth defect has not been confirmed yet, but it is proposed to be a multifactorial disease with involvement of both genetic and environmental factors. The authors describe identical twins with lipomyelomeningocele of the same subtype and location without any familial history of similar abnormality.

Background: In general, it seems that both genetic and environmental factors play important roles in the induction of neural tube defects. Lipomyelomeningocele (LipoMMC) is a rather common type of closed neural tube defect, but only limited studies have investigated the potential risk factors of this anomaly. Therefore, the purpose of this case-control study was to investigate the risk factors involved in LipoMMC formation.

Lipomyelomeningocele, a closed neural tube defect, usually occurs in lumbosacral area as a single lesion but can be associated with other spinal dysraphism. We report an infant with a very rare presentation of tandem lumbosacral lipomyelomeningoceles, thick filum terminale and split cord malformation.

Objective: Myelomeningocele is a complex central nervous system malformation mostly associated with other neural and extraneural anomalies. A rare special feature of the forehead and skull was observed in myelomeningocele. Here, we present several patients with myelomeningocele, severe hydrocephalus, and interfrontal encephalocele accompanied by metopic suture widening and abnormally shaped frontal bones.

Objective: There are controversies about seizure risk factors in shunted hydrocephalic patients which can be due to having merged two different types of seizure (preshunt and postshunt seizures) in previous studies. Also, it is not known whether a considerable change in ventricular size after shunting can be a risk factor of postshunt seizures.

Methods: 150 hydrocephalic patients who underwent shunting from 2006 to 2011 in the Children's Hospital Medical Center in Tehran, Iran, were visited at least 1 year after shunting to assess risk factors of preshunt and postshunt seizures.
