Background And Aims: Evidence from high-income countries has linked duration and compliance with treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs) with reductions in substance use and improvements in mental health. Generalizing these findings to other regions like South America, where opioid and injection drug use is uncommon, is not straightforward. We examined if length of time in treatment and compliance with treatment reduced subsequent substance use and presence of psychiatric comorbidities.

Introduction: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) increase the risk of psychotic experiences (PE), but little is known about heterogeneities of this association in different developmental stages, dimensions, or whether they are affected by substance use disorder (SUD). This study examines the association between different types of ACEs at various developmental stages and lifetime PE in patients with SUD in Chile.

Methods: We included 399 consenting adults in outpatient or residential SUD treatment programs.

Introduction: Several phenotypic factors are associated in the literature with an increased risk of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Along with female sex and older age, certain systemic diseases show an association with CTS, with varying degrees of evidence.

Methods: This study was performed using the UK Biobank resource - a cohort study of over 500,000 participants who have allowed linkage of phenotypic data with their medical records.

Materials, Furnaces, and Texts: How to Write About Making Glass Colours in the Seventeenth Century.

Johann Kunckel's (1679) is arguably the most important text on seventeenth-century glassmaking. As an augmented German translation of Italian (1612) and English (1662) editions, Kunckel presented a complex and layered text that contained a plethora of recipes, elaborate commentaries and annotations, and various appendices dealing with glass-related technologies and arts. We reworked four recipes for rosichiero glass (a transparent red glass) in Kunckel's book to discover what strategies Kunckel employed to help readers engage with the recipes and to make the recipes work in the specificity of their own workshop.

The Oxford Finger Nail Appearance Score - a new scoring system for fingernail deformity following paediatric finger tip trauma.

Fingernail deformity is common, yet current methods used to define cosmetic appearance following trauma are mainly descriptive. In order to quantify the cosmetic appearance of the fingernail, we developed the Oxford Fingernail Appearance Score using a three stage iterative process. The score has five cosmetic components marked as binary outcomes composed of nail shape, nail adherence, eponychial appearance, nail surface appearance and presence of a split.

Surgical intervention for paediatric infusion-related extravasation injury: a systematic review.

Objectives: This systematic review aims to assess the quality of literature supporting surgical interventions for paediatric extravasation injury and to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to support invasive techniques in children.

Methods: We performed a systematic review by searching Ovid MEDLINE and EMBASE as well as AMED, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and clinicaltrials.gov from inception to February 2019.

Implications for the Multi-Disciplinary Management of Children With Craniofrontonasal Syndrome.

The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the genetic and phenotypic features of patients with craniofrontonasal syndrome (CFNS), and the implications of the condition for multidisciplinary management.The subjects were 25 female patients with a mutation of EFNB1, who presented to the Oxford Craniofacial Unit during a 38-year period. Medical records were reviewed for genetic and phenotypic information.

Rehabilitation of telephone communication in cochlear-implanted adults.

Objectives: Telephone use correlates with quality of life, and is one of the most important expectations of cochlear implant candidates. The aim of the present study was to assess the benefit of a progressive intensive 18-session training program, conducted by telephone in cochlear implant recipients.

Material And Methods: Nine cochlear-implanted adults underwent telerehabilitation focused on telephone use, with before-and-after assessment of: auditory performance, on Lafon monosyllabic words and MBAA sentences in quiet, cocktail-party noise and by phone; telephone use, on ad-hoc surveys and number of calls per week; and quality of life on ERSA and APHAB questionnaires.

Design, Analysis, and Fabrication of a Piezoelectric Force Tray for Total Knee Replacements.

Force plates have been widely adopted in biomechanical gait analysis to measure reaction forces and the center of pressure. In this work, the force plate concept is miniaturized and extended for use within the polyethylene bearing insert of a total knee replacement (TKR). A simplified rectangular-shaped force plate with multiple integrated piezoelectric sensors, including designs with six and eight transducers, is presented in this work.

The History of Knowledge and the Future of Knowledge Societies.

The new field of the history of knowledge is often presented as a mere expansion of the history of science. We argue that it has a greater ambition. The re-definition of the historiographical domain of the history of knowledge urges us to ask new questions about the boundaries, hierarchies, and mutual constitution of different types of knowledge as well as the role and assessment of failure and ignorance in making knowledge.

Composite Grafts for Pediatric Fingertip Amputations: A Retrospective Case Series of 100 Patients.

Background: Fingertip amputations are common. This study reports on the outcomes of composite grafts used for fingertip amputations in children, measuring graft take, predictors of graft take, complications, and patient-reported outcomes.

Methods: A retrospective case series of consecutive patients (≤ 16 years) undergoing composite grafts for fingertip amputations in a tertiary pediatric hospital, January 06 to December 16, was performed.

Gas and seismicity within the Istanbul seismic gap.

Understanding micro-seismicity is a critical question for earthquake hazard assessment. Since the devastating earthquakes of Izmit and Duzce in 1999, the seismicity along the submerged section of North Anatolian Fault within the Sea of Marmara (comprising the "Istanbul seismic gap") has been extensively studied in order to infer its mechanical behaviour (creeping vs locked). So far, the seismicity has been interpreted only in terms of being tectonic-driven, although the Main Marmara Fault (MMF) is known to strike across multiple hydrocarbon gas sources.

Chronic disease in the Mojave desert tortoise: Host physiology and recrudescence obscure patterns of pathogen transmission.

A seminatural, factorial-design experiment was used to quantify dynamics of the pathogen and upper respiratory tract disease in the Mojave desert tortoise () over 2 years. Groups of initially healthy animals were separated into serologically positive (seropositive), seronegative, and artificially infected groups and paired into 23 pens. We found no evidence of long-term immune protection to or of immunological memory.

Current margin practice and effect on re-excision rates following the publication of the SSO-ASTRO consensus and ABS consensus guidelines: a national prospective study of 2858 women undergoing breast-conserving therapy in the UK and Ireland.

Introduction: There is variation in margin policy for breast conserving therapy (BCT) in the UK and Ireland. In response to the Society of Surgical Oncology and American Society for Radiation Oncology (SSO-ASTRO) margin consensus ('no ink on tumour' for invasive and 2 mm for ductal carcinoma in situ [DCIS]) and the Association of Breast Surgery (ABS) consensus (1 mm for invasive and DCIS), we report on current margin practice and unit infrastructure in the UK and Ireland and describe how these factors impact on re-excision rates.

Methods: A trainee collaborative-led multicentre prospective study was conducted in the UK and Ireland between 1st February and 31st May 2016.

Getting out of a tight spot: an overview of ureteroenteric anastomotic strictures.

Radical cystectomy and urinary diversion is the gold-standard treatment for muscle-invasive and high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Ureteroenteric anastomotic stricture is a well-known complication of urinary diversion and is associated with serious sequelae that lead to total or partial loss of kidney function, infectious complications, and the need for additional procedures. Ropivacaine and dexamethasone: a potentially dangerous combination for therapeutic pain injections.

Introduction: Targeted spinal steroid injections are effective in reducing back pain in selected patient populations and carry a small risk of significant adverse neurological outcomes. Recent recommendations are for the use of non-particulate steroid agents for all spinal injections to reduce the risk of neurovascular embolic adverse events. Many injections have used a combination of local anaesthetic agent with the steroid.

A polymer encapsulation approach to prepare zwitterion-like, biocompatible quantum dots with wide pH and ionic stability.

A surface modification approach adopting polymer encapsulation was developed to prepare zwitterion-like quantum dots (ZWL-QDs). The fundamental physical, chemical, and biological properties of the ZWL-QDs were characterized. It is found that the ZWL-QDs almost preserve the quantum yield (QY) of native hydrophobic QDs in organic solvents, and also are compact in size (7 ~ 10 nm hydrodynamic diameter) and stable over wide pHs or in high salinity solutions.
