Serum glycosidases in diabetes mellitus in relation to the retinopathy and to the length of the disease.

The following glycosidase activities in sera have been studied: alpha-D-mannosidase, beta-D-glucuronidase, N-acetyl-beta-D-galactosaminidase, alpha-D-galactosidase, beta-D-galactosidase, alpha-D-glucosidase, beta-D-glucosidase and beta-D-fucosidase, in diabetic patients in relation to the presence of microangiopathy, evident by retinopathy, and to the length of the disease. A significant increase of all the enzyme activities, except for alpha-D-galactosidase was found. These elevations were independent of the development of retinopathy and the duration of the diabetic process.

[Human semen lactate dehydrogenase isoenzymes in fertility studies (author's transl)].

The lactate dehydrogenase isoenzyme pattern has been obtained in the semen of 87 males undergoing fertility studies. The proportion of LDH-X, the isoenzyme specific to the spermatozoa, is reduced in proportion to the reduction of the sperm density and motility. LDH-X is the most abundant isoenzyme in the semen of normospermic subjects.

[Erythrocyte levels of ALA-dehydrase and uro-synthetase in chronic renal insufficiency (author's transl)].

Erythrocyte levels of ala-dehydrase and uro-synthetase as well as hematocrit, hemoglobin, iron levels and serum iron binding capacity were studied in a group of 28 patients with chronic renal failure in hemodialysis and compared to those of a control group. As is usual, hematocrit, hemoglobin an iron levels were significantly decreased, as were ala-dehydrase levels, while uro-synthetase levels were within normal levels. These results are interpreted as a blockade of the biosynthetic pathway of the protoporphyrins, which lends support to the hypothesis of an existing defect in hemoglobin synthesis in patients with chronic renal failure.

Microbiology of frozen goat meat and toxin production by Bacillus cereus isolated therefrom.

Microbial analysis of commercial samples of freshly frozen goat meat and those stored at - 12 degrees C for one week revealed high counts of aerobic bacteria, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococci. These counts increased with storage. Psychrophilic bacteria were higher in number than mesophiles.

Effects of carbenicillin on blood coagulation: a study in patients with chronic renal failure.

A study of coagulation has been performed on 8 chronic renal failure patients receiving carbenicillin therapy. All showed a prolongation of the bleeding, recalcification, partially-activated thromboplastin, prothrombin and thrombin times. These findings suggest the presence of an anticoagulant with an heparin-like mode of action.

This paper starts a series on red blood cell (RBC) metabolism in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). The glycolytic enzyme levels and in vitro half-lives of these patients' RBCs were determined. A number of enzymes (hexokinase, glucose-6-phosphate isomerase, fructose-6-phosphate kinase, aldolase, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and lactate dehydrogenase) showed higher activities than in normal control RBCs.
