Human activities have changed the natural rates at which metals are moved and accumulated in both land and water environments, resulting in negative impacts on local wildlife. In this study, concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cd, Pb, Cu, Mn, Co, and Zn were evaluated in water and riverbed sediment samples collected from the Verde River basin (VR), as well as in tissue samples from five native Loricariidae species. Sediment samples collected from the central section of the VR riverbed indicated the presence of metal concentrations, which were primarily attributed to scattered pollution sources linked to rural activities in the surrounding areas.

Ultimately, the Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) have acquired a relevant role in biological and biomedical experiments alongside other rodents. The use of gerbils in research has been mainly oriented to physiological and pharmacological studies, with special attention to nervous, digestive, and auditory systems as well as microbiology and parasitology. Ultimately, gerbils have also been applied for studying carcinogenesis in different organs and systems, since these animals show a natural propensity to develop spontaneous proliferative lesions, especially in steroid-responsive organs.

International guidelines establish EUS-guided sampling as safe and accurate for the evaluation of mediastinal solid lesions, such as lymphadenopathies of unknown origin, and point out an increased risk of severe infectious complications induced by needle puncture in mediastinal cystic lesions. A retrospective case series and a systematic review documented an increased risk of mediastinal abscess formation after EUS-guided lymph nodes sampling in patients with sarcoidosis. The authors describe a case of a 38-year-old male patient with a final diagnosis of sarcoidosis, who developed a large mediastinal abscess after EUS-guided fine-needle biopsy of mediastinal lymphadenopathies.

This work proposes an economic model predictive control (EMPC) strategy in the linear parameter varying (LPV) framework for the control of dissolved oxygen concentrations in the aerated reactors of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). A reduced model of the complex nonlinear plant is represented in a quasi-linear parameter varying (qLPV) form to reduce computational burden, enabling the real-time operation. To facilitate the formulation of the time-varying parameters which are functions of system states, as well as for feedback control purposes, a moving horizon estimator (MHE) that uses the qLPV WWTP model is proposed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study highlights the drawback of simplifying complex histopathological data into single indices, which can result in significant information loss regarding environmental quality.
  • The research aimed to assess the effectiveness of a multivariate approach that combines individual histopathological responses with contaminant levels, comparing it to the traditional univariate Bernet index.
  • Results showed that the multivariate analysis provided a clearer classification of environmental quality across various sites, while the univariate index was less reliable and primarily identified only the most severely impacted areas.

Background: The approach to esophageal obstruction or discontinuity remains challenging and often involves complex reconstructive surgeries. The rendezvous endoscopic technique might be interesting in cases of complete esophageal obstruction.

Case Presentation: Herein we describe a successful case of endoscopic recanalization of the esophageal lumen in a patient with a long-standing esophageal discontinuity resulting from several surgeries and chemoradiation for a squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx, ending in a major cervical amputation, construction of a neopharynx, and definitive surgical closure of the superior esophagus with a PEG placement.

Although anaerobic reactors are an excellent alternative in the treatment of domestic effluents, they have the disadvantage of requiring post-treatment. Many technologies have been studied and, recently, rapid filtration systems have been presented as a viable alternative for post-treatment. This work compared post-treatment techniques for anaerobic upflow sludge blanket (UASB) reactors by rapid filtration systems (double filtration (DF); triple filtration with clinoptilolite (TFc); and triple filtration with activated carbon (TFac)) to conventional systems (facultative pond (FP); biological filter (BF); biological filter with recirculation and decantation (BFD)), verifying their potential for improvement of the final effluent quality.

The purpose of this study was to find an alternative application for chrysotile asbestos, given that there is a complete structure of extraction and production of this class of serpentine minerals, but its use is banned for many applications. The idea was to obtain a compound that could immobilize phosphate by triggering a reaction between the magnesium oxide and hydroxide contained in the mineral, without causing phosphate leaching. To this end, chrysotile (MgSiO(OH)) was treated with phosphoric acid (HPO) in a molar ratio of 1:3 in an aqueous medium at 85 °C until the solvent evaporated, resulting in two different solid compounds, which were prepared in a similar manner.

The catalytic activity of metal-organic framework Cu(INA) (INA = isonicotinate ion) and the complex [Cu(INA)(HO)] were studied in the Copper-catalyzed Azide-Alkyne Cycloaddition (CuAAC) and Biginelli reaction under solvent-free reaction conditions. The robust, efficient and eco-friendly new method allowed the preparation of a variety of 1,2,3-triazole compounds in good to excellent yields and high selectivity for the 1,4-disubstituted triazole. Moreover, for the Biginelli reaction between aldehydes, ethyl acetoacetate and urea, the corresponding dihydropyrimidinones (DHPMs) were also obtained in satisfactory yields under mild reaction conditions for both catalysts.
