  • Low-dose aspirin is used for preventing venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing total joint replacement, but this study compares the safety and effectiveness of chewable versus enteric-coated versions.
  • A retrospective analysis of over 9,000 patients showed that while there were no significant differences in VTE and gastrointestinal complications overall, chewable aspirin was more effective for preventing VTE specifically in total knee arthroplasty patients.
  • The study concludes that while both formulations of aspirin are generally effective, chewable aspirin outperforms enteric-coated aspirin for VTE prophylaxis in total knee arthroplasty cases, without an increase in GI issues.

Background: While Medicare requires patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for many quality programs, some commercial insurers are requiring preoperative PROMs when determining eligibility for total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Concerns exist that these data may be used to deny TKA to patients above a specific PROM score, but the optimal threshold is unknown. We aimed to evaluate TKA outcomes based on theoretical PROM thresholds.

Arsenic is a well-known carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic element and occurs in the environment both as inorganic arsenic (iAs) and organoarsenical compounds (oAsCs). Since the toxicity of arsenic compounds depends on their chemical form, the identification and determination of arsenic species are essential. Recently, the European Food Safety Authority, following the European Commission request, published a report on chronic dietary exposure to iAs and recommended the development and validation of analytical methods with adequate sensitivity and refined extraction procedures for this determination.

Global crop and food contamination with mycotoxins are one of the primary worldwide concerns, while there are several restrictions regarding approaching conventional physical and chemical mycotoxins decontamination methods due to nutrition loss, sensory attribute reduction in foods, chemical residual, inconvenient operation, high cost of equipment, and high energy consumption of some methods. In this regard, the overarching challenges of mycotoxin contamination in food and food crops require the development of biological decontamination strategies. Using certain lactic acid bacteria (LAB) as generally recognized safe (GRAS) compounds is one of the most effective alternatives due to their potential to release antifungal metabolites against various fungal factors species.

The average background radiation exposure in the United States has nearly doubled over the previous quarter century, with almost all the increase derived from medical imaging. Nearly 2% of all cancers in the United States may be attributable to radiation from computerized tomography (CT) scans. Given the nondiagnostic nature of CT scans that are used in elective knee and hip arthroplasty today, special consideration should be given to the inherent risk of radiation exposure with routine use of this technology.
