Inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) and endocrine disorders are common genetic conditions in the Saudi population with the incidence rate often underestimated. Newborn screening (NBS) using various disease panels provides the first line in the early detection and intervention among infants with a high risk of IEM. Here we aim to assess the incidence of screening disorders and provide an overview of the NBS program at the Ministry of Health Tertiary Care King Fahad Medical City.

Article Synopsis
  • Mentha arvensis, also known as peppermint, was studied for its toxic and repellent effects using essential oil (MaEO) on the cockroach Nauphoeta cinerea at various concentrations.
  • The study utilized gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to identify major compounds in MaEO, revealing that menthol is the predominant component at 71.31%.
  • Results showed that MaEO decreased oxidative stress markers like lipid peroxidation and non-protein thiols, while key compounds indicated potential analgesic properties through molecular docking studies.

  • Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is vital for infant and maternal health, but rates are declining globally, prompting a study in the Aseer region of Saudi Arabia to assess EBF prevalence and influencing factors among mothers.
  • A survey was conducted from January to March 2024 involving 1,008 mothers and examined various elements such as education level, delivery method, pregnancy history, and support for breastfeeding.
  • The findings revealed that only 13% of mothers met EBF criteria, and factors such as lower education levels and vaginal delivery increased EBF rates, while higher education and cesarean sections decreased them.

Accurately predicting the Modulus of Resilience (M) of subgrade soils, which exhibit non-linear stress-strain behaviors, is crucial for effective soil assessment. Traditional laboratory techniques for determining M are often costly and time-consuming. This study explores the efficacy of Genetic Programming (GEP), Multi-Expression Programming (MEP), and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) in forecasting MR using 2813 data records while considering six key parameters.

Background: Self-efficacy is a popular psychological concept that refers to an individual's perception or belief in his ability to perform specific actions. This study aimed to assess the predictive value of self-efficacy, measured using the Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease 6-Item Scale (SEM6S) questionnaire, for diabetes management and overall well-being in patients with diabetes.

Subject And Methods: An anonymous online cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the self-efficacy of diabetic patients in the Asser region of Saudi Arabia.

A series of novel Schiff base derivatives (1-28) of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid were synthesized in a multi-step reaction. All the synthesized Schiff bases were obtained in high yields and their structures were determined by HNMR, CNMR, and HR-ESI-MS spectroscopy. Except for compounds 22, 26, 27, and 28, all derivatives show excellent to moderate α-glucosidase inhibition.

Background: Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs) represent a heterogeneous group of inherited metabolic lysosomal disorders characterized by neurodegeneration. This study sought to describe the clinical and molecular characteristics of NCLs in Saudi Arabia and determine the most common types in that population.

Methods: A retrospective review of electronic medical records was conducted for 63 patients with NCL (55 families) from six tertiary and referral centers in Saudi Arabia between 2008 and 2022.

Abiotic stresses including sodium chloride (NaCl) are known to negatively affect plant physiology and seed germination by inducing a delay in establishing seedling emergence. The monoterpene carvacrol is the major component of several aromatic plants and seems to interfere with germination and seedling growth. In this study, we investigated whether treatment with carvacrol attenuates the effects of NaCl on the germination and development of Allium cepa, where biochemical parameters were also analyzed.
