Integral assessment of gas exchange during veno-arterial ECMO: accuracy and precision of a modified Fick principle in a porcine model.

Assessment of native cardiac output during extracorporeal circulation is challenging. We assessed a modified Fick principle under conditions such as dead space and shunt in 13 anesthetized swine undergoing centrally cannulated veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-A ECMO, 308 measurement periods) therapy. We assumed that the ratio of carbon dioxide elimination (V̇co) or oxygen uptake (V̇o) between the membrane and native lung corresponds to the ratio of respective blood flows.

Effects of dexmedetomidine and its reversal with atipamezole on echocardiographic measurements and circulating cardiac biomarker concentrations in normal cats.

Objective: To investigate the effects of dexmedetomidine (DXM) and its subsequent reversal with atipamezole (APM) on the echocardiogram and circulating concentrations of cardiac biomarkers in cats.

Animals: 14 healthy cats.

Procedures: Cats underwent echocardiography and measurements of circulating cTn-I and NT-proBNP concentrations before (PRE) and during (INTRA) DXM sedation (40 µg/kg IM) and 2 to 4 (2H POST) and 24 (24H POST) hours after reversal with APM.

Inter- and intraobserver agreement for CT measurement of mandibular and medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes is excellent in dogs with histologically confirmed oral melanoma.

Mandibular and medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes are routinely evaluated with CT when staging dogs with oral melanomas. While size alone is considered inadequate for detecting nodal metastasis, it is critical in evaluating treatment response, as clinical decisions are based on changes in size. It is common for different radiologists to measure the size of pre- and posttreatment lymph nodes in the same patient.

Assessment of Right Heart Function during Extracorporeal Therapy by Modified Thermodilution in a Porcine Model.

Background: Veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy is a growing treatment modality for acute cardiorespiratory failure. Cardiac output monitoring during veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy remains challenging. This study aims to validate a new thermodilution technique during veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy using a pig model.

The left lateral projection is comparable to horizontal beam radiography for identifying experimental small volume pneumoperitoneum in the canine abdomen.

Nontraumatic spontaneous pneumoperitoneum suggests the presence of gastrointestinal perforation; early detection can be lifesaving. Horizontal beam projections have been reported to be more sensitive than standard radiographic views for detecting small volumes of free peritoneal gas. This prospective, experimental, analytical study compared both left lateral (LL) and ventrodorsal (VD) standard views to horizontal beam projections for detecting small volumes of artificially induced pneumoperitoneum in live dogs.

Extrahepatic biliary duct obstruction secondary to duodenal foreign bodies in 2 dogs.

Two dogs, a 5-year-old neutered male boxer dog and a 2-year-old neutered male Australian cattle dog, were evaluated for vomiting and inappetence. Both dogs were icteric on physical examination, and had hyperbilirubinemia, elevated liver enzymes, and inflammatory changes on diagnostic blood analysis. A proximal duodenal obstruction causing extrahepatic biliary duct obstruction (EHBDO) was suspected in both cases after diagnostic imaging was performed.

Homelessness in Adults with Invasive Pneumococcal Disease (IPD) in Calgary, Canada.

Background: Homelessness is uncommon, but is frequently a characteristic in adults with invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). In Calgary, homeless persons comprise approximately 0.2% of the population.

Beta-sarcoglycan-deficient muscular dystrophy presenting as chronic bronchopneumonia in a young cat.

Case Summary: A 5-month-old cat was evaluated for a 3 week history of cough, nasal discharge, decreased appetite and weight loss. Musculoskeletal examination was normal and serum creatine kinase (CK) activity was within the reference interval. The cat was treated during the next 10 months for chronic, persistent pneumonia.

Odontogenic parakeratinized cyst resulting in exophthalmos and palatine, maxillary, and zygomatic bone erosion in a dog.

A novel case of a canine odontogenic parakeratinized cyst (COPC) that resulted in exophthalmos and palatine, maxillary, and zygomatic bone erosion in a 5-year-old Chihuahua dog is reported. Final diagnosis was aided by cross-sectional imaging (magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography) and confirmed with histologic examination of the cyst wall.

THE EFFECT OF DEXMEDETOMIDINE ON RADIOGRAPHIC CARDIAC SILHOUETTE SIZE IN HEALTHY CATS.

Dexmedetomidine, an alpha2 -adrenergic agonist, may be used in companion animals for chemical restraint, including cardiac evaluation. Echocardiographic changes associated with alpha2 -adrenergic agonists have been described; however reports of radiographic changes in cats were not found at the time of this study. Aims of this observational, prospective, experimental study were to describe the effects of dexmedetomidine on the radiographic appearance of the cardiac silhouette in healthy, adult cats.

Mobilisation of public support for policy actions to prevent obesity.

Public mobilisation is needed to enact obesity-prevention policies and to mitigate reaction against their implementation. However, approaches in public health focus mainly on dialogue between public health professionals and political leaders. Strategies to increase popular demand for obesity-prevention policies include refinement and streamlining of public information, identification of effective obesity frames for each population, strengthening of media advocacy, building of citizen protest and engagement, and development of a receptive political environment with change agents embedded across organisations and sectors.

Patchy progress on obesity prevention: emerging examples, entrenched barriers, and new thinking.

Despite isolated areas of improvement, no country to date has reversed its obesity epidemic. Governments, together with a broad range of stakeholders, need to act urgently to decrease the prevalence of obesity. In this Series paper, we review several regulatory and non-regulatory actions taken around the world to address obesity and discuss some of the reasons for the scarce and fitful progress.

Assessing barriers and facilitators of implementing an integrated HIV prevention and property rights program in Western Kenya.

Despite the recognized need for structural HIV prevention interventions, few scientific programs have integrated women's property and inheritance rights with HIV prevention and treatment. The current study focused on a community-led land and property rights intervention that was implemented in two rural areas of Western Kenya with high HIV prevalence rates (24-30%). The program was designed to respond to women's property rights violations in order to reduce HIV risk at the local level.

Formation, characterization and detection of a ternary complex between S protein, thrombin and antithrombin III in serum.

S protein, a plasma glycoprotein with Mr 78,000, has been shown to interfere with the heparin-catalysed inhibition of thrombin by antithrombin III. This interaction was further evaluated in the present study. Native human blood was replaced by either radiolabelled antithrombin III or radiolabelled prothrombin in the reaction mixture, which was incubated at 37 degrees C.
