Article Synopsis
  • - Acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (APSGN) can lead to severe kidney problems in some children, particularly in cases of rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis (RPGN), which can result in very low urine output and worsening kidney function.
  • - The study analyzed kidney biopsies from children with APSGN over a 24-year period, finding that over half of the patients presented with advanced kidney injury, particularly those with reduced kidney function prior to the biopsy.
  • - The research highlights that measuring estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) beforehand can help identify patients needing urgent kidney biopsies for better diagnosis and treatment planning in severe APSGN cases.

Most succinate dehydrogenase (SDH)-deficient renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) demonstrate stereotypical morphology characterized by bland eosinophilic cells with frequent intracytoplasmic inclusions. However, variant morphologic features have been increasingly recognized. We therefore sought to investigate the incidence and characteristics of SDH-deficient RCC with variant morphologies.

Background: Achieving negative margins for melanoma in situ, lentigo maligna type can be challenging, particularly on cosmetically sensitive areas.

Objective: To assess the utility of intraoperative frozen section margin assessment using a teledermatopathology system in the treatment of head and neck lentigo maligna.

Methods And Materials: Over a 6 year period, 96 patients with lentigo maligna had surgical excisions.

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) of the urinary bladder are rare. We present a case of a 72-year-old man who presented with back pain and acute renal failure. Ultrasound showed a soft tissue mass in the base of the bladder causing bilateral ureteric obstruction.

Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (PSGN) is the commonest cause of severe acute glomerulonephritis in New Zealand children, with the majority (85%) of the patients being of either Pacific Island or Maori ethnicity. We have performed a retrospective study on 27 pediatric patients with acute PSGN. Of these patients, those with crescentic glomerulonephritis (n = 11) had a greater tendency (72.

While much information is available on the structural connectivity of the cerebral cortex, especially in the primate, the main organizational principles of the connection patterns linking brain areas, columns and individual cells have remained elusive. We attempt to characterize a wide variety of cortical connectivity data sets using a specific set of graph theory methods. We measure global aspects of cortical graphs including the abundance of small structural motifs such as cycles, the degree of local clustering of connections and the average path length.

Background: The diagnosis of giant cell arteritis (GCA) is often confirmed by an early temporal artery (TA) biopsy of adequate length. Treatment of this condition with high-dose corticosteroids may be associated with significant morbidity, including osteoporosis.

Aim: To audit current management of patients with suspected GCA at Auckland Healthcare, a large teaching hospital.

Background: Previous work has demonstrated that intestinal ischemia increases plasma amylin concentration. This study examined the relationship between the degree of intestinal ischemia injury and plasma amylin in an experimental rat model.

Methods: Wistar rats were divided into a control group (n = 6); a sham-operated group (n = 9); and 3 intestinal ischemia-reperfusion groups (n = 8 in each), which underwent clamping of the superior mesenteric artery for either 15, 30, or 45 minutes followed by 15 minutes of reperfusion.

A retrospective survey was undertaken of 228 resected Meckel's diverticula to determine if there was any evidence of Campylobacter pylori infection in diverticula containing gastric mucosa. Among the 65 diverticula with gastric mucosa one was heavily infected with organisms having the morphological appearances of C pylori. The specimen had been removed from a six year old Samoan boy who had been admitted with small bowel obstruction.
