Article Synopsis
  • The article discusses the development of a model to assess forest naturalness in Slovak mountainous spruce forests, using both discriminant analysis and an additive approach.
  • Key indicators of forest naturalness identified include crown length to tree height ratio, deadwood volume, and coverage of grasses, mosses, and lichens, with the discriminant model achieving a classification accuracy of 74.5%.
  • The proposed framework suggests using forest naturalness as a main criterion for conservation decisions, incorporating factors such as restoration potential, endangered species presence, and additional natural values.
