Purpose: The Berlin poly-trauma definition (BPD) has proven to be a valuable way of identifying patients with at least a 20% risk of mortality, by combining anatomical injury characteristics with the presence of physiological risk factors (PRFs). Severe isolated injuries (SII) are excluded from the BPD. This study describes the characteristics, resource use and outcomes of patients with SII according to their injured body region, and compares them with those included in the BPD.

Summary Background Data: Major trauma patients highly rely on immediate access to specialized services, including ICUs, shortages caused by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic may influence their outcome.
Methods: A multi-center observational cohort study, based on the Dutch National Trauma Registry was performed.
Background: The goal of trauma systems is to match patient care needs to the capabilities of the receiving centre. Severely injured patients have shown better outcomes if treated in a major trauma centre (MTC). We aimed to evaluate patient distribution in the Dutch trauma system.

The definition includes injuries with an Abbreviated Injury Scale score of ≥3 in ≥2 body regions (2AIS ≥3) combined with the presence of ≥1 physiological risk factors (PRFs). The PRFs are based on age, Glasgow Coma Scale, hypotension, acidosis, and coagulopathy at specific cutoff values.

The RTCs set up the Dutch National Trauma Registry (DNTR) to evaluate epidemiology, patient distribution, resource use and quality of care. In this study we describe the DNTR, the incidence and main characteristics of Dutch acutely admitted trauma patients, and evaluate the value of including all acute trauma admissions compared to more stringent criteria applied by the national trauma registries of the United Kingdom and Germany.

Different chelating resins, specific designed for the accumulation of PGEs, namely Purolite S914, S920, S985, Italmatch Chemicals IONQUEST MPX-317 and MP-102, were compared. The method development involved several different steps: 1) selection of an appropriate diffusive gel, 2) comparison of resins for the PGEs in terms of kinetics of uptake, 3) development of an efficient elution method for the PGEs from the resin gel, 4) Determination of diffusion coefficients for the PGEs in the diffusive gel, 5) Investigation of the influence of pH, ionic strength and dissolved organic matter on the diffusion coefficients and 6) study the selectivity of the tested resins gels in terms of potential interferences on the determination by ICPMS.

Purpose: Previous experience has revealed excellent outcomes when using the Meniscus Arrow (Conmed Linvatec Ltd., Tampere, Finland) bioabsorable meniscal repair system for the fixation of small fracture fragments. This study describes the results of the fixation of Mason type 2 radial head fractures with these Arrows in a prospective series of 21 patients.

Recent studies have presented a relatively high incidence of non-union and identified speciic limitations of the shoulder function in subgroups of patients with these injuries.
Aim: A prospective, multicentre randomised controlled trial (RCT) will be conducted in 21 hospitals in the Netherlands, comparing fracture consolidation and shoulder function after either non-operative treatment with a sling or a plate fixation.
Postpartum stroke is rare, and because complaints are similar to preeclampsia, diagnostic confusion may delay the diagnostic workup that should include prompt computerized tomography of the brain. We describe a patient with postpartum stroke who died because of extensive ischemic damage throughout the brain with 3 simultaneous arterial occlusions. We stress the importance of raising this diagnosis in your workup because adequate measurements like angiography and intra-arterial thrombolysis could significantly improve the patient's outcome.

Both its color and its NMR behavior change with temperature and solvent due to changes in the spin state of the complex. This led us to study the complex spin states using DFT calculations.

The objectives of this study were to determine whether time-to-surgery affects development of pressure ulcers postoperatively and, thus, length of hospital stay.

Exposure oftissue factor, which is abundantly present in brain tissue, is the initiator of the coagulation cascade and plays an important role in the pathogenesis of coagulopathy after TBI. Coagulopathy after TBI is actually a manifestation of the disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) syndrome.

In addition the X-ray crystal structure of all three complexes was determined. The reaction kinetics of the complexes with DNA model base guanosine-5'-monophosphate (GMP) was studied, revealing reaction kinetics comparable to cisplatin.

The crystal and molecular structures of one of the complexes has been determined and the cytotoxicity and reactivity with 5'-guanosine monophosphate is reported. The complexes show a reduced reactivity, but no decrease in cytotoxic activity compared to their chloro-counterparts.

The complexes, composed of a cathepsin targeting ligand and a platinum(II) moiety with varying degrees of reactivity towards nucleophiles were characterized by physical-analytical methods and a proof of principle was illustrated in a model reaction. In biological tests for inhibitory activity against cathepsin B the presented compounds did not show significant inhibitory activity.

An important drawback of these chemotherapeutics is the lack of selectivity for tumour cells, usually resulting in severe toxic side effects. A glucuronyl-platinum conjugate was designed and synthesised to test the compatibility of platinum compounds with beta-glucuronidase-based prodrug therapy.

Head orientation preference was related to: the foetal position, the initial head position when the newborn was lying prone on the abdomen of the mother, the handedness of the parents and the state of the infant (according to Prechtl). Although for the whole group a head orientation preference for the right side was observed, an individual significant head orientation preference was observed in less than 50% of the infants studied.
