Article Synopsis
  • Actinidia arguta is a widely distributed species known for its small, smooth fruit, rapid softening, and strong cold tolerance, distinguished from the cultivated Actinidia chinensis.
  • Researchers created a detailed genome assembly of A. arguta, which is 2.77 Gb long and organized into 116 pseudo-chromosomes, revealing two distinct geographic groups based on evolutionary divergences.
  • The study identified three key genes that contribute to fruit softening and explored the genetic basis of traits related to sexual dimorphism, providing a foundation for future research and agricultural enhancement of this species.

Premise Of The Study: Polymorphic microsatellite markers were developed to reveal the genetic diversity of extant populations and the mating system of (Hamamelidaceae).

Methods And Results: In this study, nuclear simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were developed using the Illumina high-throughput sequencing technique (RNA-Seq). The de novo-assembled transcriptome generated a total of 64,694 unique sequences with an average length of 601 bp.

Article Synopsis
  • Anthocyanins, which give red-fleshed kiwifruit its color, are affected by high temperatures, yet their trafficking in plants hasn't been well researched.
  • A study found that temperatures above 25 °C inhibit anthocyanin accumulation in the 'Hongyang' kiwifruit by affecting gene expression related to color formation.
  • Cell structure analysis revealed that high temperatures hinder the formation of anthocyanin-related structures in fruit cells, indicating that multiple mechanisms are at play in how heat impacts coloration in red-fleshed kiwifruit.

An ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) procedure of epimedin A, epimedin B, epimedin C and icariin from Herba Epimedii was developed. The effects of ethanol concentration, ratio of liquid to solid, UAE time, extraction temperature and number of extraction cycles on the extraction yields of the four flavonoids from Herba Epimedii were investigated. The optimal UAE condition was found using orthogonal test: 50% (v/v) ethanol solution, liquid:solid ratio of 30 ml/g, ultrasonication duration 30 min, extraction temperature 50 degrees C and three extraction cycles.
